Just recently I remembered about him (again) and that the origin of the anime and ova series also was a light novel. I liked the story back then and the character of this unusual "irresponsible" Captain. But that is also all what I know about the light novel series. Besides the high probably, that it will never be translated.

Since I dont have much knowledge, maybe one of you here can help me with some of my questions.
How much of the novel series was adapted into the anime.
How good or bad are the novels really.
Exist somewhere a translation or at least a part of one?

From wiki :
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor (無責任艦長タイラー, Musekinin Kanchō Tairā?) is an anime series based on The Most Irresponsible Man in Space (宇宙一の無責任男, Uchū Ichi no Musekinin Otoko?) light novel series by Hitoshi Yoshioka. It was produced by some of Japan's larger studios, including Big West, Tatsunoko Production, King Records and VAP.

Tylor is comprised by a 26-episodes TV series created by Kōichi Mashimo, and a sequel OVA series of 10 episodes directed by Mashimo and Naoyuki Yoshinaga. The TV show premiered in Japan on TV Tokyo between January 25, 1993 and July 19, 1993, and was broadcast across Latin America by the television network, Magic Kids. Both series were broadcast across the United States by AZN Television. Tylor is distributed across North America by The Right Stuf International.
So if you are talking about the novel, maybe you will have better luck finding with the novel name?

Heres the wiki link to the japanese novel... Its in japanese...
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%AE%87% ... B%E7%94%B7

and for the series, there are 9 novels for the first story, and with other irresponsible series, there are at least 54 volumes...

As for the other questions, sorry, i have no idea... this is the first time i even heard of such a series LOLz

Yeah, I did found the sites too, but since I cant read japenese and the gibberish one did get with google translation isnt sufficient enough... ;)

btw. moments ago I even thought that it seems as if the author passed 2007 away, because of this translation (よしおか ひとし、1960年7月16日 - |into| - Hitoshi placed OK, 1960 was March 16, 2007 -) whats the meaning of this 2007?

And do anyone know if the irresponsible Captain Tylor have more manga adaptions besides "Love&War"? - It seems not...

Do anyone know if the story of the manga "Love & War" for this series really was continued in a light novel (2002)?

That is the name of the light novel series that formed the basis of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor anime series.

To anyone that does not know, this series is about a guy who joins the United Planets Space Force so he can have an easy life. Through circumstance and extreme good fortune he's quickly given command of a destroyer in the UPSF fleet called the Soyokaze, which is sort of the military's dumping ground for it's various ne'er do wells and troublemakers. Little does Tylor know that the military really just wants to get rid of him and, in fact, they undertake several attempts to have him killed outright. His luck, however, holds out no matter what they do. So begins the adventures of the most irresponsible man in space!

I cannot read Japanese but I decided if there was one series where I would try to learn it for, it was this one.
Well just yesterday I did some research to find the titles to this original novel series and sought to obtain them.
Well I was super amazed that I found them on the Amazon.co.jp website.
Long story short they should be on their way to me soon and will contain 9 books detailing the main story and 4 side story books.
Although I definitely plan on trying to read them myself I thought it only fair to let the good folks at Baka Tsuki know about it.
I would definitely like to help get these stories out there for others to enjoy because the likelihood of these books being licensed seems extremely doubtful.

So, if there are any Justy Ueki Tylor fans here, let me know.

P.S: There was a 3 vol manga series released in 2001 I might attempt to locate as well.

SO there's not much market for older light novels. Typical old is bad mentality mixed with a small fanbase. Well, I do not care, I will work to learn to read and then I will translate these stories for the benefit of the world! Because the world needs to learn the lessons taught by Tylor! And through me, so they shall. bwahahahahahahaha!

Okay, at least I hope the originals are at least as fun to read as the anime was is to watch. I shall endeavor to learn ASAP.

Got the majority of the books from FedEX today. Much quicker than expected. What a different character design the book drawings have from the anime. A very 80's manga look.

That would be nice - I would like to read at least a teaser of that, because I would like to know if the captain in the novels is as strange as in he is in the anime

PS: pls merge those both threads.

Character Intros. Don't expect much, I can't even read the language on my own but I've got Kanji and Kana books plus grammar guides and one friend who HAS taken actual Japanese classes to call upon if I need him.

The only thing completely translated is the intro on the inside of the cover which I've worked out to say:

"Honored Reader, do you feel empathy for this man? Justy Ueki Tyler a military man of unmatched skill. His contrary superior officers have no capacity to imagine the mind of the man who envisions such eccentric stratagems to no end!
This is the first of a new space opera written by Yoshioka Hitoshi
