Kyon is just a very clever way for Kyoani to advertise itself.
...Tg...g.g........... And Kol Ravensabbey cried,
..g...B...g........@.. "In Armok's name!!!!"
T...T..B..g........... And there was bloodshed.

I continue to hold to the possibility that "Kyon" is an obscure reference/multilingual pun. "Kyon" is one transcription into English of the Greek word for dog. Anybody with slight familiarity with scientific names for mammals might recognize this. Procyon lotor, for example is the scientific name for the raccoon.

With Haruhi dragging the lad around by his neck tie, the joke is there whether the author intended it or not. I give the author the benefit of the doubt.

Oh I never seen it that way. In that case I'd believe that Kyon's nickname has no hidden meaning behind it. The author seems very well read, so I expect that it is an intended joke.
But that brings up the question, why would the aunt start calling him Kyon?

Maybe she's just the quirky one in the family? Kyon must get it from somewhere.

The fact that the author never actually explained why his aunt started calling him Kyon makes me think it could be an indicator to his real name. But maybe not. Maybe there's nothing to the name what so ever and one say when the series is finished somebody will ask the author "Say, why did you give him the nickname Kyon anyway?" To which he will reply "Mahunno."

Fear my Yorkshire mumblification of "I do not know".

Quite.

@Oni-kun: Cockney accent taking over Leeds too? Cities just can't escape the unyielding powers of Estuary English these days.

Which brings up the point...if his father doesn't exist, then he created himself and the "Kyon is god" theory is true!
