I don't mean some specific volumes, just those you haven't read yet.

If you really care for your characters, I think you should allow for closure at the appropriate point.
I'd hate to see it turning into something like the Ranma comics, where the whole thing just went stale. Emotionally all the characters are currently stuck in limbo. It may be partially commercial pressures, but it's probably also the writers reluctance to move things on, he's become too self-aware.
The first novel felt like he was making it up as he went along. It had a very fresh, spontaneous feel to it. Things are starting to feel too "planned" these days.
In the end, it would be better to have a limited amount of novels where every novel is an absolute, rock-solid classic than a series with moments of brilliance but also a lot of filler material.
