Volume 1 Ch8 - Numbers in brackets?

I was wondering what the numbers in brackets are in chapter 8. There's "(1)" through to "(3)", but they don't seem to refer to any translator's notes.

Also just want to say, keep up the great work on ZnT! It seems to be somewhat short-staffed compared to Haruhi but oh well. As long as we can get it eventually... I found the anime a bit disappointing (especially the end of the second season) when I found out how much they had skipped over.
