As blasphemous as this may sound, I actually think that sometimes less can be better in terms of the length of anime series. The reason why I say this is because if you let a series run too long, the quality will drop, even if it is based off of something. Many of us are probably familiar with that quality drop around the middle of a series, starting about episode 10 or so. If the next Haruhi series had that, I think I would be seriously peeved.

Actually, I felt that episode 10 was the best episode, and it was better through 11-14. There was a quality drop at 9, but that was because Someday in the Rain was... unique. I think it was just pieced together.
Besides, sometimes more is better too. Kanon was a hundred times better with 24 episodes than 13. Plus Kyoto makes everything better.
