Do you mean vol. 10? Vol.9 has nothing to do with any of the ranking above.

Do you mean the fourth book in the first week sales ranking? It is Hana-monogatari.
Is it the latest one? After the White&Black ones?

東野圭吾 - The omnipresence in any Japanese bookshop. He has written countless best-sellers (many of them are detective/mystery stories) that get adapted into successful movies and TV dramas. My classmates know nothing about Japanese but many of them are avid readers of his Detective Galileo series.

I've read the Galileo series before. It's pretty good(although the part where they start to explain all those scientific jargon make me have to open my dictionary over and over again), but I can't get into it as much as I get into Agatha Christie's story. I wonder why myself, but maybe it's the modern setting and over the top trick(hard to believe there's that many genius who can do such a high-tech trick to be murderer) compared to Christie's victorian setting and simple trick that will get discovered pretty quickly with modern technology.

Still, a great detective/mystery novel though. Definitely recommending this to detective story lover. For people not knowing Japanese and wonder what's the setting is about, you can check the drama with the subtitle that should be floating across the net by now.

The best way to learn any language is by immersion.
Anyways, do you know some good novels on this list?
Dengeki

*13,389部 11/02/08 **6日 はたらく魔王さま!
(Hataraku Maou-sama! An award winning novel on how a demon king got stuck in working on some low-pay jobs in Japan.)

**5,604部 11/05/10 **6日 雨の日のアイリス
(Iris on Rainy Days. There is a dedicated thread in the forums with a teaser available in the wiki. My favourite in 2011.)

HJ

**7,983部 11/06/30 **4日 僕の妹は漢字が読める
(Boku no Imouto wa Kanji ga Yomeru: About an alterante world where kanji has disappeared from Japan and light novels have taken over as the pillar of contemporary literature. The premise is weird but creative by SF sense. Some see the story as an indirect criticism against both light novels and traditional literature, wrapped in moe entertainment.)

GAGAGA

**5,706部 11/02/18 **3日 花咲けるエリアルフォース
(Hana Sakeru Eriaru Force: Another work from Sugii of Haganai, Kamimemo)
