So, each board has on it different "teams" for these contents as well, right? What exactly are the topics? I have tried probing 4chan and the like in the past with little success because I have always felt that it is not exactly intuitive in how it is laid out, but that is probably just me.

Hmm....the only board I will wholeheartedly warn you about is /D/. It has it's own set of rules.

Other than that, try to stay on the 'safer' side of things.

To start with 2ch is not an image board. But since much of our discussion centres on it I guess it is still relevant.

2ch is basically as diverse as you can get in terms of breadth of topics and quality of posters. Although it is general consensus in the Japanese society that it is no more than "toilet graffiti (便所の落書き)" in terms of reference value, IMO it is futile to try condensing it into one single phrase. After all, it is perfectly normal to see some highly intellectual discussions in one 2ch thread and perpetual trolling in another.

Imagine if you consolidate all internet forums in your native language into one single site, force a universal (and retarded) 1990s page style upon them, but still allow them to run independently from each other. This would be the 2ch in your language.

The key is to find the right thread for you. I had quite many pleasant chats in the novel threads and find them very informative. They are certainly no worse than most light novel discussion threads in English. On the other hand many of the android girl threads are full of annoying trolls, but I still frequent there for manga and illustrations updates.

The xenophobic atmosphere is certainly hard to swallow. But after reading so much of their bashings on Chinese and Koreans somehow I gained an immunity towards that and just stopped to care. Also, the braindead ultranationalists pretty much concentrate at certain topics. In general as long as you avoid all political discussions and vipper threads you will be doing fine.

As for image boards, I am disappointed that no one brought up gurochan, which is one of my favourites.

The xenophobes certainly steer clear of eroge boards

Sadly, neither of those solve loneliness.

Loneliness might be the number one cause of depression. So are Otaku depressed? Do they occupy the hole in their hearts with anime?

Note on that image: Looks cool... However, not something I will care to do in my room. I wouldn't make fun of him, or have any insults directly or indirectly hitting this subject, but all I have to say is. It's their choice/money/whatever that allowed them to do this. I see that he's proud of it, for he has placed himself in the image. He also wears a shirt, which looks like Shana to me, demonstrates that he isn't afraid to show the public about such concerns. I kinda think that's nice. I don't have enough courage for such things.
