Translating Japanese expression to English

Post by kuroi_shinigami »

I create this topic to help with people who're not using English as their native language and have difficulty in translating expression in Japanese. I'll start with my question first

How do you translate そうだよな in English?

The example conversation I found is :

A : あの日彼もあそこにいったんだ
B : ああ、そういえばそっか。そうだよな。
Fill in the blank : She ( ) a bus

Yoshii Akihisa's answer : She is a bus

Tsuchiya Kouta's answer : 彼女はブスです

Sou da yo na = It certainly seems so.

Sou = So, or whatever the other was saying.
Da = Is
Yo = Adds emphasis, almost certainty.
Na = Adds an emotional twist, almost as of resignation.

As with everything, it depends on the context. Google says simply, "I agree."

At least, that's my take on it. I'm no professor of Japanese.

How would you translate どうせなら in English?

Example sentence would be どうせなら, あそこに行っこう.
Fill in the blank : She ( ) a bus

Yoshii Akihisa's answer : She is a bus

Tsuchiya Kouta's answer : 彼女はブスです

From WWWJDICT http://www.edrdg.org/cgi-bin/wwwjdic/wwwjdic?1C you find:
どうせなら (conj) (if you want to do something) you might as well
The sentence then comes out as "If you want to, then let's go over there."

 Thank you as always. It's not that I don't understand the meaning, it's just that my English is not that good so I can't find the equivalent expression in English. It will be easier to translate it to my native language, but translating expression indirectly through another language never bodes well XD.
