In light of the recent spam

Do you have a fully fleshed idea that you think Baka-Tsuki should adopt? Post it here.

Don't know. All I know in this particular case was that he was indeed still a member of the Newly Registered Users group . . . from which I then removed him. I have been keeping an eye on the list, sometimes several times a day, but either new people aren't reaching the ten posts very often, or they're being transitioned automatically now. In either case, I haven't had to do much.

Another strike against the notion that it is automatic. There was a guy out there with 11 posts suddenly this morning, but his ID was still showing bold pink. I manually removed him from the "Newly Registered Users" group. This appears to happen once or twice a week, on the average. We have many hundreds of users with fewer than 10 posts in the group at this point. Those that are actually considered translators now (2-3 of them) have been removed from the group already even though they had fewer than 10 posts so far.

There are approximately 4500 members in the list of newly registered users, but only about 1200 of them (more or less) have ever posted anything at all. At a glance, I'd say that more than a few of those users with no postings were created by spammers, and many have been in the list for more than a year.

Cleaning up the list would be a good idea, but should probably be done with a script by somebody who knows how, since removing them one by one would take a very long time...

I completly agree with Rpapo. I thought the same thing few days ago.
We are currently 576 members who have more than 10 post.
And a lot are disconnect for lots of months, even lots of years years. I think, if the pink list must be cleared, it might be a good idea to clear others too (Registered users... I didn't check the other groups).

How much time of inactivity after creating the account should it be taken?

The idea is good. But it's an administrator job!

More to the point, it should be done with some sort of script that I am pretty sure only the Great Administrator Himself (TLG) can do on the server machine.

Well, it's actually built in phpBB (3), normally...
It's the feature called "Prune users".
So you can prune users from the board in order to keep only the active members.
You can also delete whole user accounts.
And you can prune and deactivate user accounts by post count, last visited date, etc
You just need access to the user management in the admin control panel ;)

But be careful, it's very powerful and it can't be undone... :?

Well, if it's built into phpBB, so much the better. In this case, there's a chance that Oni has the rights to do it too. Unless I miss my guess, though, none of the rest of us have those rights. I certainly do not (nor am I'm asking for them, either).

Oh, okay, I though you guys were admin ;)

I didn't remember that groups' leaders may also change the group of users

Not quite. I am only a project translator that was given a handful of special rights, perhaps by virtue of being an older (and presumably more mature and responsible) person. I am definitely not an old timer on the forum (since late 2009 only), nor am I part of the "inner circle". The real administrators around here are TLG and Oni.

There is nothing to fear - usually Oni purges every year the users below a point of posts. Till now the limit were 5 or 10 ten posts...

No need for that many, even. Simply clearing out anything with zero posts and no logins in over six months would probably do a lot of good.

I really think that the forum needs a huge cleaning, especially because there's this.

Indeed, all those accounts you found are highly suspicious ^^'
Especially given their "website" links...
