==Chapter 5: Survival race on the snowy mountain==

Three days after arriving to the undead tribe’s lands.

At last the day has come. It’s the day the hundred deaths course is held on.

On the huge three thousands meters tall snowy mountain that had become the race course, we resolutely went to the hundred deaths reception hall at its foot.

Though that’s fairly obvious, right now we have the highlight right before our eyes.

In the reception hall there were gathered monsters of varied looks that came from all of the Netherworld.

According to Zonmi.

Though in the quickly developed Netherworld it’s become customary to live in human form for the purpose of convenience, it seems that that custom has yet to permeate into every nook and cranny of the Netherworld.

For that reason, among the monsters gathered at the reception hall there’s a fair amount that have not adopted human forms. Monsters that look like mummies and monsters that look like vampires… It looks like the core of the participants comes from the undead tribe.

Before the reception hall there are many stalls in a row, there’s a mood like it’s some sort of festival.

“Muu. This…Intoxicatingly mellow fragrance that resembles a forbidden fruit crafted by the devil… Candied apples!?”

“Do candied apples have such an exaggerated smell!?”

“Monster hunter. I have recalled that I had some business to take care of. I shall go wait in line around here.”

Iris slurped the drool that spilled from her mouth while wiping it with her robe’s sleeve.

“… So it seems. Do we need to remain together from here on?”

Nonetheless, Iris being alone leaves me with a dreadful unrest.

She may have that haughty attitude, but a stranger wouldn’t have it difficult to lure her with a piece of candy.

“Chiharu-sama. Rather than worrying for others you should first worry about yourself.

If it’s about Iris-sama, leave it to me. I’ll watch her so that she doesn’t get hurt.”

Lowering her voice so as to not be heard by those around us, Lilith-san secretly whispered to my ear.

“Lilith-san. Thank you very, very, very much.”

That’s right.

It’s as Lilith-san has said.

I have to attain victory in the race and get my existence as a human acknowledged among the ghoul clan.

It would be unsightly to forget about my main objective because of being worried about others.

It seems that the development of the competition will be broadcasted in real time via monitors and the rest of your group can cheer you from there.

I haven’t told this to Kyouko and Manami, who had disappeared after saying they had issues to attend, though.

“… Chiharu. Let’s go to the tent on the other side of the reception hall.”

Zonmi tugged my sleeve while looking around, worried by the public notice.

Even supposing that she hadn’t come back to the Netherworld in a long time, if word gets out that the country’s princess was at this place, things would get a bit rowdy.

For that reason, today Zonmi was wearing glasses & a hood that covered the upper part of her face so as to disguise herself a little.

How troublesome it is to be famous.

“Now let’s follow the succubus’s words and finish with the registration asap.”

“Understood.”

This way, Zonmi & I, while feeling grateful for Lilith-san’s actions, set foot on the reception hall.

Having the majority of the monsters finished with their registration, the inside of the tent was more deserted than I had expected.

Speaking of the most important registration… It happened so easy that it was even disappointing.

“Hey, Zonmi. Wasn’t the hundred deaths course the biggest event for the ghoul clan?”

“Yes. Didn’t I explain it to you beforehand?”

“… But, isn’t it weird?

They don’t even hold any preliminaries for such an important event… You can participate this easily on the same day.”

Lilith-san called the hundred deaths course the Olympics, Netherworld-style, but to me, that example didn’t fit it.

Surely, judging by the number of participants and the scale of the venue alone, this race may deserve to be called the Olympics, Netherworld-style.

However, with only this, it’s unnatural that despite being a large-scale event, there’s absolutely no selection of the participants.

Well, since if they did have preliminaries there’s no doubt that we wouldn’t be able to participate in this race, it’s not like I have complaints.

“… It’s easy. Though it sounds cruel, this competition not having preliminaries is due to being more exciting to mix strong people with weak people.”

“? What does that mean?”

“Since there’s no rule that guarantees the participant’s lives, that way they get naturally sieved… As expected from the Netherworld’s sports, how nasty.”

“Whoa, Kyouko!? You… What have you been doing until now!?”

The one who answered my question instead of Zonmi, was Kyouko, who appeared all of a sudden.

“What have I been doing… Don’t you understand seeing me like this? Sorry, but… Waiting and cheering is boring.”

On Kyouko’s chest there was a badge with a registration number that identified her as a participant in the hundred deaths course. In this badge, it seems there was a transmitter that served to locate the participant in case they got stranded on the snowy mountain.

“Eeeh. Could it be that you're also participating?”

“What’s with that face of open disgust?”

“Because…”

It’s simply that my chance of winning have gone down.

But I desisted in my heart on giving in and saying aloud my honest feelings.

… Is there a need of saying that now?

If it’s Kyouko, since she knows what’s the reason behind this competition, she should be able to properly read the mood.

For the one in a million chance that I can win… There’s no doubt that she’s giving me all of her support.

Thinking that I have one more ally, it’s rather reassuring.

“Ufufu. I won’t lose to the zombie!”

“…”

Laughing fearlessly, Manami wore a badge with an registration number on her chest.

The one who can’t read the mood in the least has comeeeeeee!

“Hey, Manami… Is there any merit from you participating in the race?”

“There’s merit. Oniichan. Did you forget the purpose of this race?”

“As if I could forget.”

I’m repeating myself, but by winning this race I’ll have the ghoul clan acknowledge humans.

“Then there’s no problem if Manami wins ♪”

“… Eh?”

“I mean. Since we aim to show to those cheeky zombies the true value of us mighty humans<ref>She says “ningen-sama”, which is “humans” plus am honorific suffix meaning superiority. Applying it to oneself sounds conceited.</ref>… Rather, wouldn’t it be more effective if Manami wins?”

“Yeah. Now that you say… It is?”

Even if it’s acceptable, I want to be spared from that development.

I mean… Could you picture it?

Just thinking on having to tell Zonmi’s father “my sister has won, so accept my contract with Zonmi!”… Too lame.

“… Besides, ever since coming to this town, I’ve been having a bad hunch.

More than this, so that the relationship between oniichan and the zombie doesn’t advance, I have to cut it off this bad progress early on… Ufufufufu.”

<nowiki>*SPARKLE*</nowiki> Manami’s eyes let out a dangerous gleam.

“…”

I think that I have found the mightiest foe right beside me.

If I’m not careful… She’s quite capable of tripping me up.

I think that my sister’s physical capabilities, strongly inherited from my mother, a living legend among monster tamers, still haven’t shown their whole depth yet.

[[File:Maou na Ore to Fushihime no Yubiwa 4 p137.png|thumb]]

“Chiharu. You can’t afford to lack in concentration. No matter who participates… We absolutely must not lost this race.”

“… Yeah. That’s right.”

Though I’ve said it just before, as expected, I think it will be difficult to persuade Zonmi’s father if Manami wins this race.

At the end of the day, the one who wins should be none other than me.

And if we’re speakung of wanting even more… I want to attain a great difference with the second place.

If I manage to stand out like that… From the results of the race it won’t be difficult to propose a negotiation with Zonmi’s father.

Having recognized the situation anew thanks to Zonmi’s warning, my enthusiasm got renewed.

<center>× × ×</center>

When I reached the snowy mountain that had become the racecourse, there were already lots of participants starting to position themselves as they pleased on the starting line.

Those numbers… five hundred, no, making a low estimate, there were around six hundred?

Since the girls had gotten delayed, changing their clothes, I who had finished my own arrangements stood all alone on the snow.

Since I had no choice but spacing out, I think I’ll check one more time the rules of the hundred deaths course.

The rules are easy.

The one from the participants who reaches the top of the snowy mountain the fastest is the victor.

However, monsters that can fly are forbidden of doing so.

Engaging in direct attacks against other participants is also forbidden.

… Though, at first glance, it may look like a half-baked competition, negligence is taboo.

As even at the best of times just traveling by a path with deeply poled up snow can have you break a bone, if you add going up a steep slope, many a monster will easily have his stamina exhausted.

“Haah… Even though I went out of my way to warn you… You’re quite eager to die.”

“Chiharu-sama… We have heard the circumstances from oneesama. Go for it!”

“Meruru. Even Aruru…!! Have you come to cheer me on!?”

“… Humph. How conceited. We were going to participate in this event since the very start.”

“… Eh. Could it be that you will be participating in this race?”

“No. Chiharu-sama. We are not contestants…”

The instant after Aruru started to tell me something.

“Ah! Isn’t the one there princess Aruru!?”

From somewhere on the venue, someone shouted that.

“So does that mean that the person next to her is princess Meruru!?” “It’s true! I… It may be my first time seeing them in person.” “I had heard rumors, but… They are very beautiful girls…” “The truth is… I’ve only participated in this race because I wanted to meet them.”

“…”

As a chain reaction from that voice, other voices kept popping up and the venue became an uproar at once.

“… Tch! They noticed us?”

Meruru muttered in a spiteful voice unbecoming of a beautiful girl.

“Chiharu-sama. Continuing with my earlier statement, we are not contestants in the hundred deaths course, we’ve been entrusted with the award delivery… We’ve been invited to this event as special guests.”

“I see. So it was like that?”

“For that… I case that you manage to win this race, Chiharu-sama, I think that we’ll meet again at the awards ceremony.”

“Human. Do your best not to die.”

“… Understood. Thanks!”

Thereafter.

The AruMeru sisters, so as to slip through the glances from those around, quickly left my side.

I thought that with Zonmi’s case, but… as expected, being a country’s princess may bring with it various hardships.

<center>× × ×</center>

Several minutes after.

In the blue sky without a single cloud… The fireworks that signaled the start of the hundred deaths course were launched.

At the same time, around six hundred monsters, raising a sound like a tremor, strived to be the first to reach the summit.

“Chiharu… Don’t leave my side!”

“… Y-yup.”

Had I not firmly grasped her hand, pushed by the surge of people, I would have lost Zonmi in a flash.

After standing for a bit at the start line, the forerunner group disappeared from sight before you could say Jack Robinson and at last we could chat peacefully.

“… But, is this right? It seems we’ve blundered charging ahead at ful strength from the beginning.”

“There’s no problem. In this competition people who make a head start are not bound to have an advantage.”

“…”

Certainly, Zonmi’s speech seemed to have a point.

It seems that around three quarters of the participants had rushed out with the starting signal, and in contrast, the remainder quarter seemed to be taking it at leisure.

According to Zonmi.

[[File:Maou na Ore to Fushihime no Yubiwa 4 p143.png|thumb]]

In this race, along the way, there were set diverse traps and, in the worst case, it seems that one has to be prepared to face the danger of losing one’s life.

This means that starting on vanguard = demerit of being more prone to falling into a trap, while those at the back, as they have the merit of being able to retain their stamina, they can progress better in the race.

“… Nonetheless, it’s not like we can remain here forever doing nothing. Chiharu, we will go on soon.”

“… Yup.”

Like this, we started the race about one minute after the starting signal.

<center>× × ×</center>

After that.

I think we kept going up the mountainside for around thirty minutes.

Have we been able to avoid the traps as Zonmi expected?

After going up the snowy mountain for a while, we found a bunch that appeared to be the leading group.

“… Chiharu. Be careful. Up there… There’s something.”

Right after Zonmi’s warning.

There were a succession of tremors in the ground and, as a result, big holes appeared here and there.

And from inside those holes, around a hundred monsters appeared all at once.

Their length is about… 5 meters<ref>Just under 16 feet and a half.</ref> or so?

They were cute monsters with tufty white fur and round eyes.

Though it’s not like their size it’s specially big compared to the monsters that I’ve met till now, the highlight was their numbers.

Surprisingly, it may be the first time I’ve seen so many of the same monster before me at the same time.

“Zonmi… What are these monsters?”

“These children are snow moles. Properly speaking, they are not monsters, they are beings called magical beasts that don’t have intelligence. At a glance, they have charming looks, but their true nature is that of ferocious carnivores. They hunt other beings in groups and eat their prey alive.”

“…”

So that means this situation is quite dangerous?

… Zonmi may say so, but I can’t quite believe it.

First, this lovely creature, there’s no way it could do such a wretched…

At that time when a question mark was floating above my head.

“Guh! Ugaaaaaah!”

A mummy man (?) that was running in the attack group<ref>This is a pun; “attack group” and “leading group” sound the same.</ref> raised a cry of agony having his head gnawed by a snow mole.

I withdraw my statement.

With such a cute face. What a wretched thing to…

“Zo-Zonmi. That guy, look! Isn’t that guy in danger!?”

Chiharu. We cannot afford to worry about other people.

Moreover, I told you. This competition is more exciting with some weak people mixed in.

More or less, having victims makes the show more exciting.”

“…”

Thinking about it, Zonmi boldly speaking without hesitation about these dreadful things gives me the chills.
<noinclude>
===Somewhat interested in Punctuation Changes===

How does the bytes work for those anyway? From what you did on IS, the apostrophes for Microsoft Word uses more space than wordpad. Can you explain that to me? Thanks--[[User:Teh Ping|Teh Ping]] 15:19, 29 May 2011 (UCT)

The types of punctuation used formally were: …‘’“” . I used the characters ... and ' and " to replace them. The thing is,
that every type of character has an id set to it in the form of a combination of bits (01010101). This is done because bits,
bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, etc, is how data is stored. In other words " does not equal “ or ” in the storing language.
However in English they would mean the same thing. " occurs earlier in the storage character table than “ or ” therefore it
has a smaller id. Thus space can be saved by using it. My advice is to either stop using MSWord and use WordPad or TextPad
editor. OR... first write in MSWord then take it to TextPad and then use the find and replace functions to switch the above
characters. You can also use FoxReplace addon if you are using Firefox but that's just a little more complex in initializing
the settings but the result is that the replacement process becomes fully automated (It's a major pain if you make a mistake
though, if you don't exclude pages you need to, then the replacement could affect something you did not wish it to). The final
way is to use this site's own search and replace function. [[User:Zero2001|Zero2001]] 15:41, 29 May 2011 (UCT)

Personally, I use the FoxReplace method. So there might be ''rare'' cases where something unintended was changed. I apologize for that. [[User:Zero2001|Zero2001]] - [[User_talk:Zero2001|Talk]] - 00:37, 4 June 2011 (UCT)

BTW, … and ... actually do not have any differences in the bytes used. I tried replacing them in an Oreimo chapter, but 0 bytes
changed. [[User:Kira0802|Kira]] 14:08, 6 July 2011 (UCT)

Hmm. I suspected as much. Basically that means that the … character is equivalent to three fullstop(.) characters.
===FoxReplace Method===
If you are using FireFox ([http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/?ref=logo download here]). Just by curiosity, what pages did you create except the collapsing upgrade? [[User:Kira0802|Kira]] ([[User_talk:Kira0802|Talk]]) 02:09, 7 July 2011 (UCT)

The collapsing upgrade was a request/idea. I made the [[Help:Color]], [[Mimizuku and the King of Night: Volume]] and [[Template:IS Nav]] pages. But basically the first was copied from another source and the second was easy to make since all it is is the full volume page. The template was hard to make though. I have prepared similar templates for "Hidan no Aria" as well as "Chrome Shelled Regios" but they shouldn't be implemented without first implementing collapsibility, otherwise it will look too cluttered on the pages.
BTW, why use the collapsibility for the projects? I mean, I k ow for the mature contents, but I do not understand for the normal projects. [[User:Kira0802|<font color="228B22">Kira</font>]] ([[User_talk:Kira0802|<font color="C71585">Talk</font>]]) 00:01, 8 July 2011 (UCT)

When ever did I say to use collapsibility for normal projects/pages. I only said that it was optimal to use them for making collapsible templates (navigation or otherwise) as well as for hiding mature contents. Where did that idea come from? Talking about the nav bar at the end of the chapters. Why would this be used since we already have the 'previous chapter', 'next chapter' and 'main page' buttons? [[User:Kira0802|<font color="228B22">Kira</font>]] ([[User_talk:Kira0802|<font color="C71585">Talk</font>]]) 16:39, 8 July 2011 (UCT)

Let's say that there are two events or dialogues that are interrelated but separated by one or more chapters or even books. Which would be preferable? Going through multiple pages to check and compare the info or simply using one link. That is why full nav templates are more preferable. I mean even for projects that have two or more points of development(ie: two or more chapters being translated at the same time) can be easily navigated between rather than having to go back to the main page and then the other one. It was taught to me in Uni. Websites that can allow the surfer to navigate from one point to another in the least amount of steps (ie: page loads) are considered more user friendly and popular than those who take more steps. I mean which would you prefer? [[User:Zero2001|Zero2001]] - [[User_talk:Zero2001|Talk]] - 18:59, 8 July 2011 (UCT)
Yea, that's great. Thanks for the edit. There's a change in sentence structure compared to the original Japanese sentence, but that can't be helped in a translation IMO due to the structural difference between Japanese and English. I also change the sentence structure sometimes in order to keep the meaning and not sounds awkward. --[[User:Kuroi shinigami|Kuroi shinigami]] 04:19, 10 July 2011 (UCT)
Yeah well that is unavoidable sometimes. I mean the sentence structures of japanese and english are basically opposites. So moving the words is inevitable. ===About reference===
====Character References====
Isn't a reference for each character name a little too much? I could understand if it's for in-game technologies, but IMHO, giving reference for a character to a wiki is a little to excessive. What do you think? --[[User:Kuroi shinigami|Kuroi shinigami]] 14:39, 13 July 2011 (UCT)

That was what I thought too. [[User:Kira0802|Kira]] ([[User_talk:Kira0802|Talk]]) 14:49, 13 July 2011 (UCT)

I don't do it each each and every time. Just normally once a volume per character. And I don't actually think it's excessive. Actually I think it will help both the IS wiki ''as well as us''. By allowing people to jump to the pages there they can start editing there as well. Think of it as an investment. By linking to them we are sharing in their popularity. And allow them to share in our readers. It's actually beneficial to both us and them. A symbiotic relationship, even if they don't link to us. Just the fact that we link to them will be enough. Trust me. [[User:Zero2001|Zero2001]] - [[User_talk:Zero2001|Talk]] - 14:55, 13 July 2011 (UCT)

As for the amount of links. Rather than going through one link and having to search there for the correct pages and then navigating to the said pages. It is better to link directly to the required page, no? Thus we change a ''two or more'' step process into a ''one'' step process. Thus the more links the better. It's the same basic principle as wikipedia. If it's just about looks. Then trust me you'll get the hang of it. And I think there was a way to streamline the links a bit more so that they look like in-wiki links. I'll try to find that method. [[User:Zero2001|Zero2001]] - [[User_talk:Zero2001|Talk]] - 14:55, 13 July 2011 (UCT)

I've already put the links there. Plus with all the other edits. It took me hours per page. Please let it stay. [[User:Zero2001|Zero2001]] - [[User_talk:Zero2001|Talk]] - 14:57, 13 July 2011 (UCT)

Well, the link for things other than the character name is a good idea IMO, but I just feel that linking character profile is a little excessive, especially in 6th volume. Wouldn't it feel strange if there's a link to a complete character profile when the person is just getting introduced into the story and you're supposed to know them throughout the story? Not to mention the potential getting-spoiled problem for people who's just curious and accidentally click on the link and read the complete profile while he/she hasn't read the later volume. But if you think that's good, I won't change it. I'm not that cruel to make your hard and great work into nothing just for something trivial like this. It's just something to think about. Thanks for your edit as always. --[[User:Kuroi shinigami|Kuroi shinigami]] 15:19, 13 July 2011 (UCT)

Actually I had thought about that. Would a warning atop the page suffice? I mean there are some who like to be spoiled and some who don't. Plus the IS wiki's character page mainly have spoiler data from the Anime. There are subtle differences between the Anime and the LN, aren't there? [[User:Zero2001|Zero2001]] - [[User_talk:Zero2001|Talk]] - 15:23, 13 July 2011 (UCT)

Yes, there's subtle difference, but still, the wiki will be updated in the future sooner and later(even faster if your target of enriching the wiki is reached) and spoiler will become abundant about the later volume's plot. And bout warning atop the page, some reader don't read the notice if they're in a hurry to know what happened next in the story, I know at least I never pay attention to warning in the top XD, but at least it will be better than nothing I guess. Well, I'll leave the matter about this link to you, other translator, and the other editors out there(and of course what the reader think) so I will lay my hand off to this matter. You don't mind if I open a topic about this in the forum just to hear what the reader thought about this right? Oh, and ask Teh_Ping and Kira too if he minds about this or not because we do have to keep the format between volumes consistent right? My vote goes to "doesn't mind"--[[User:Kuroi shinigami|Kuroi shinigami]] 15:33, 13 July 2011 (UCT)
At least I hope it will stop the guys translating the LN over at the IS wiki and/or lure them here. And I don't think Teh Ping or Kira would mind seeing as I just finished doing it (adding the reference links) for all the chapter pages to date (Volume 6 was the last). Thus making the format between the volumes consistent. Boy was that a brain burner. It took days to go through everything and change a lot of stuff. Da-ka-ra. Like I said. Why write everything from scratch when there is such a convenient source for cross-referencing around already? All I need is the go ahead. Switching the links will be a snap with me using FoxReplace. Plus with books you have to flip through a multitude of pages for what you're searching for. Her it's a single link. The work load is extremely reduced. Besides even if you do put all the explanation you will still have to link them, there really isn't much difference except using an already existing source for the links. Of course... It goes without saying that I won't do anything without some approval. [[User:Zero2001|Zero2001]] - [[User_talk:Zero2001|Talk]] - 23:05, 13 July 2011 (UCT)
: You didnt get it right? There are no where in this wiki character overviews also no links to those! (In my opinion. But if the other admins will allow that, I wouldnt have said anything, but once where those removed from a project.) Terminology list (/overviews) are different, since their purpose is to show which term to use for the translation of some rare special words, also to show how to transcribe (some) names. --[[User:Darklor|Darklor]] 02:44, 14 July 2011 (UCT)

If you can't undo the changes then that's fine too. I can manually change it, given time. But if you are going to submit a poll then consider if the readers will be able to understand the terminology and the system used. Personally I think they wouldn't be able to wrap their heads around it and go for the negative option just because it's beyond their understanding even if it is easy to use. New systems are like that in a way. Easy to use but complex to understand, in the beginning anyway. Though once they do understand it the popularity just skyrockets. Anyway, there can be referral links for two things. 1. IS terminologies. 2. Obscure references (Saves time for us translators so that we don't have to do translator notes). However, please remove the character links, since there are spoilers related to them.--[[User:Teh Ping|Teh Ping]] 02:54, 14 July 2011 (UCT)

Well, it seems our supervisor also doesn't agree about character links due to spoiler, so I guess we'll have to remove the character links eventually. If what Zero wants is to refresh everyone's memory about character name, why not make a separate pages just linking the character appearing in it? Maybe with a little insert of small non-spoilerish introduction in the page too along with the link to the IS wikia, just like a character introduction page in manga. The LN has it too, but it's too short and usually only on the very main character, so it should be fine to make it on separate page. That way, not only that people who doesn't want to read back the volumes can be reminded on who the cast is, the people who don't want to be spoiled can just skip the page completely.--[[User:Kuroi shinigami|Kuroi shinigami]] 11:54, 14 July 2011 (UCT)
Aww maaann. Oh well. Feel free to do so. At least the IS terminologies will remain. Proverb: A bird in hand is better than two in the bush. Linking to the IS wiki Character pages from there with a spoiler warning at the beginning of the section? How does that sound? And I think we should move this discussion to the IS Main Page's Talk Page. It's gone beyond a simple conversation hasn't it? Or maybe not. It might cause more disruption. Okay. Thanks to the upgrading references can be grouped now. I've done it for volume 6. At first I toyed with the naming of the reference groups I though of using "v6c#" or "c#" where # stands for the chapter number. But a number followed by another number didn't look good. Really it didn't... Then I thought to make it small yet good looking by puting "6A", "6B", "6C", etc... where 6 stood for volume 6 and A, B, C, etc... for the chapter 1, 2, 3, etc... Also, I'm not sure adding all the '?' was really really necessary either. Oh, no problems. I never make references lol. Normally, I only do it for editors in case of translation problems. However, sometimes, I'll directly make a T/N in parenthesis and don't want that on the bottom of the pages. In that case, I'll specify it. I don't know, wife even in the PDF, you need refs. I think [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_tea red tea] is fine. We should stay as faithful to the original as possible. A reference note should do for explaining. As for the wikipedia links. Hmm...
