Oh. IIRC, Tohka doesn't know how his name is written, so when she calls Shidou, it's written with katakanas. For the nav bar, do you want the simple one or the template? Its grammatical errors. Translation errors are not my forte ( and I personally don't think there are any. I am able to follow the translation flow.). As to the places....near about everywhere. My main confusion is regarding the tense. There's a continuous change between past and present tense (leaving aside the dialogue). Also, there are errors for punctuations...and many more. I made some large edits to vol2 chapter 1, part 1 without consulting you first:

changed to

was a particular large one, hopefully it hasn't drifted to far from what you originally wanted it to say.

Most of the edits have been minor and towards changing things like "is" to "was", making things plural/singular of that sort of nature, trying to make things a bit more uniform looking in terms of numbers of [......],etc. Even more head scratching since I've encountered Yoshino's speech, LOL so I just left them how they were. The more dramatic changes I tried leaving TLC tags as hidden notes directly in the text, which you've removed so I assume they weren't too bad.

Ideally, like the latest edits, we'll just discuss them in the relevant discussion pages (There are few scenes that that I changed from the earlier chapter 1 edits that I'll pull out to discussion pages to go through later). But reading through it hasn't been too bad, there have only been 1-2 lines at most that in each chapter have been really confusing. Usually in the narrative bits of the text where some sequences seem a bit jumbled. The dialog has been fine. Hi Riki-kun. Erm, yeah...I just wanted to point out a few things about your Date A Live translations. To begin with, your English is confusing to the point of being incomprehensible. I guess the Editors can fix that...but the meanings might end up getting distorted. Also your translations aren't very accurate and you seem to be skipping some parts...If you don't understand stuff you can always post it in the Lingua Franca Lexicon forum. BT's never had minimum requirements for quality, and I don't think that it's a good idea to set such a precedent for it. Though it is a little troubling when translations are wrong, I think readers would be much happier to hear that you continued rather than giving up. I think that all stella meant to say was that you should feel free to ask for help when you think that there's something that you're not completely understanding. Besides, if you just take care when translating, skipping lines won't be a problem at all. For Tohka's pronunciation of Shidou's name, what should it be? shido, shidou, or Shido? Should it be capitalized? In the terminology page, the reference usedis "shidou", should I go with the names from the terminology page when editing?

Riki, not my fault. For volume 7's epilogue I followed the Chinese translations and they did say that Shido kissed Miku after having sealed her powers. umm..For Volume 10 chapter 3, "He remembered being told to use this connectable special line even though the communication station might be blown off by the space quake." I believe it sounds a bit off. Instead of 'even though', won't 'even if' fit into the situation better? 'Even though' refers to a definite outcome while 'even if' refers to a possible outcome imo. Kotori should be informing Shidou that he could use that special line on the possibility that communication station might be blown off instead of the communication station will be definitely blown off.

Dear riki,

I would like to have permission to revert my previous edits on Absolute Duo for the following reasons:
1. With my edits the flow of the sentences is easier to understand. Ex:

'“……………why don’t we try buying as much gelato as you can eat for now? If you cannot finish then I will eat the leftovers.”

Because of me forgetting, her disappointed look was really pitiful and after I brought up an idea-------

“That is a good idea.”'

Logically, wouldn't Tooru FIRST think of the idea THEN state it? The current organization makes it seem as if Tooru said something THEN thought of it. The reason I swapped sentences was to improve sentence flow and logic. As a result of my changes, the chapter was easier to understand and read. Thus, I believe my sentence swapping was the correct method of approach.

2. The revision of the sentences makes them less clumsy and overall, easier to grasp the underlying meaning. My edits never changed the intention, nor the tone of the sentence. These sections were so painfully written, there is no other option than a complete overhaul of said section. Ex:

"Looking at the pile of clothes she tried on, as they started entering the list of purchase, I thought she bought too many as expected and if I did not tell her it’s about
time we should head to other shops then I would have no idea what would have happened."

There is no possible way to rearrange words in order to turn this into a grammatically correct sentence. My edit to it is drastically easier to understand while retaining the original tone and meaning:

"Looking at the pile of clothes at the cash register, Yurie bought too many clothes (as expected). If I hadn't told Yurie it was time to go to other shops, I have no idea
how many clothes she would have bought."

There are many other sentences where shifting around words are impossible. Ex:

"I gave up denying since anything I do will be useless and made a nod mixed with a wry smile."

This is a blatant run-on sentence. Once again, my edit retained the original meaning and tone while correcting the grammar of the sentence while making it easier to understand.

"I gave up on correcting the misunderstanding. I nodded while giving a wry smile."

There are many more cases such as these that my edits corrected. Once again, this improved the flow of the chapter while making it easier to read.

3. You mentioned to me that the periods indicated the amount of time the characters thought. I believe that changing the "..................." into "..." like I did was correct for two reasons. 1. It's grammatically correct. 2. It makes reading the chapter easier on the eyes, thereby making the chapter easier to read.

I apologize for not informing you before I made these edits (I'm new around here), and during the time of edit, I hadn't read the guidelines for editing yet. However, I do not believe this puts me in wrong (involving the changes I made with my edits), as my edits made reading drastically easier. Thus, I would like your permission to put my edits back into effect.

Its grammatical errors. Translation errors are not my forte ( and I personally don't think there are any. I am able to follow the translation flow.). As to the places....near about everywhere. My main confusion is regarding the tense. There's a continuous change between past and present tense (leaving aside the dialogue). Also, there are errors for punctuations...and many more. Most of the edits have been minor and towards changing things like "is" to "was", making things plural/singular of that sort of nature, trying to make things a bit more uniform looking in terms of numbers of [......],etc. Even more head scratching since I've encountered Yoshino's speech, LOL so I just left them how they were. The more dramatic changes I tried leaving TLC tags as hidden notes directly in the text, which you've removed so I assume they weren't too bad.

Ideally, like the latest edits, we'll just discuss them in the relevant discussion pages (There are few scenes that that I changed from the earlier chapter 1 edits that I'll pull out to discussion pages to go through later). But reading through it hasn't been too bad, there have only been 1-2 lines at most that in each chapter have been really confusing. Usually in the narrative bits of the text where some sequences seem a bit jumbled. The dialog has been fine. I guess the Editors can fix that...but the meanings might end up getting distorted. BT's never had minimum requirements for quality, and I don't think that it's a good idea to set such a precedent for it. Though it is a little troubling when translations are wrong, I think readers would be much happier to hear that you continued rather than giving up. I think that all stella meant to say was that you should feel free to ask for help when you think that there's something that you're not completely understanding. Besides, if you just take care when translating, skipping lines won't be a problem at all. umm..For Volume 10 chapter 3, "He remembered being told to use this connectable special line even though the communication station might be blown off by the space quake." I believe it sounds a bit off. Instead of 'even though', won't 'even if' fit into the situation better? 'Even though' refers to a definite outcome while 'even if' refers to a possible outcome imo. Kotori should be informing Shidou that he could use that special line on the possibility that communication station might be blown off instead of the communication station will be definitely blown off.

Dear riki,

I would like to have permission to revert my previous edits on Absolute Duo for the following reasons:
1. With my edits the flow of the sentences is easier to understand. Ex:

'“……………why don’t we try buying as much gelato as you can eat for now? If you cannot finish then I will eat the leftovers.”

Because of me forgetting, her disappointed look was really pitiful and after I brought up an idea-------

“That is a good idea.”'

Logically, wouldn't Tooru FIRST think of the idea THEN state it? The current organization makes it seem as if Tooru said something THEN thought of it. The reason I swapped sentences was to improve sentence flow and logic. As a result of my changes, the chapter was easier to understand and read. Thus, I believe my sentence swapping was the correct method of approach.

2. The revision of the sentences makes them less clumsy and overall, easier to grasp the underlying meaning. My edits never changed the intention, nor the tone of the sentence. These sections were so painfully written, there is no other option than a complete overhaul of said section. Ex:

"Looking at the pile of clothes she tried on, as they started entering the list of purchase, I thought she bought too many as expected and if I did not tell her it’s about
time we should head to other shops then I would have no idea what would have happened."

There is no possible way to rearrange words in order to turn this into a grammatically correct sentence. My edit to it is drastically easier to understand while retaining the original tone and meaning:

"Looking at the pile of clothes at the cash register, Yurie bought too many clothes (as expected). If I hadn't told Yurie it was time to go to other shops, I have no idea
how many clothes she would have bought."

There are many other sentences where shifting around words are impossible. Ex:

"I gave up denying since anything I do will be useless and made a nod mixed with a wry smile."

This is a blatant run-on sentence. Once again, my edit retained the original meaning and tone while correcting the grammar of the sentence while making it easier to understand.

"I gave up on correcting the misunderstanding. I nodded while giving a wry smile."

There are many more cases such as these that my edits corrected. Once again, this improved the flow of the chapter while making it easier to read.

3. You mentioned to me that the periods indicated the amount of time the characters thought. I believe that changing the "..................." into "..." like I did was correct for two reasons. 1. It's grammatically correct. 2. It makes reading the chapter easier on the eyes, thereby making the chapter easier to read.

I apologize for not informing you before I made these edits (I'm new around here), and during the time of edit, I hadn't read the guidelines for editing yet. However, I do not believe this puts me in wrong (involving the changes I made with my edits), as my edits made reading drastically easier. Thus, I would like your permission to put my edits back into effect.

tl;dr My edits improved grammar, sentence flow, and ease of reading

The brackets around GROUP were probably meant to emulate the Japanese-style quotation marks 『』 used in the novels, but they aren't really necessary. The Japanese like to put things in quotation marks to distinguish them in the same way capitalizing the word is sometimes used in English (e.g. Esper names like Meltdowner and AIM Stalker are put in quotes in the novels.) I used to puts things in quotes excessively in my translations because I was copying the Japanese usage, but I stopped recently.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what to tell you. Due to the way I learned Japanese, # of kanji known means nothing to me. I couldn't tell you how many I know or how many you need to know for a LN. You say you have been studying Japanese for several months, so my guess is you are not ready. It took me several years to be proficient enough to read a LN comfortably. Still, the only way to know for sure is to get one and try reading it, so I would suggest starting with one and seeing how well you do. == Regarding Keywords in Index Volumes 9 & 10: 天文台 or Belvedere ==

Hello Js06. I have noticed that the current translations of Index Volumes 9 & 10 have the keywords of the arc literally translated instead of the part that is spoken. i.e. The base kanji is translated instead of the kana at the top. e.g. 追跡封じ is translated as 'tracking sealer' but is spoken as Route Disturb. This also goes for Shorthand and Croce di Pietro. I will go and fix these in my own time.
It is easy to find these literally translated terms as they have 'apostrophes' around them.

In the Volume 10 translation, in certain situations the word 'observatory' has apostrophes around it as well. Also, Index II episode 12 has the title 天文台, translated as 'astronomical observatory' but spoken as Belvedere. If you happen to have a copy, can you tell me if the word Belvedere is used in Volume 10 anywhere instead of observatory? It could explain why the word observatory has apostrophes around it. == Consultation on Fixing Non-js06-Translated Index Volumes ==

Hello again js06. I was looking at the earlier Index Volumes (1-13,SS1) and I have found that they are not up to scratch to what one would expect of a light novel translation (obviously not including your translations). A lot of the terms have been translated literally like in my above topic. There is little consistency in the terms used. Worst of all there are plenty of sentences throughout the volumes which are entirely capitalised. I am planning on starting from Volume 1 and try and fix things (including incorrect terminology and capitalised sentences) sometime later in the year. However, I do not actually have a physical copy of the earlier volumes so I have to rely on other methods of checking the original japanese (Manga Raws, Anime and Kanji on the Index Wikia).

I have found that the '''Toaru Majutsu no Index no Subete Glossary''' is a good reference for translation. However, aside from the already translated and modified version on the wiki, I dont have access to the original scans so I can double check the translations and see which parts have been modified or reinterpreted by the wiki. '''Do you happen to have a link to these scans?''' (There was a statement on the page that you were the one who translated it.)

Lastly, I will inevitably run into problems when fixing up the translations and will require a more experienced translator with an actual copy to answer some more volume-specific questions (like the Belvedere issue above). I've seen San Mercado's Japanese rendition translated as "Pure Metropolis". 大市 can mean either "big city" (metrópolis) or "big market". Given that 1)it's a brand and 2)"mercado" means "market", I'd say it should be translated as something like "big market", "central market", or even "supermarket". Translated into English from current Spanish it means "Saint Market", but in ancient Spanish "San Mercado" or "Santo Mercado" was closer in meaning to "Sacred Market". My dictionary gives me 清らか as "clean, pure, chaste". Looking at English synonyms, personally I'd translate 清らか大市 as "virtuous market", "unblemished mart" or something of the like.--~~

On a side note: Monogatari Second Season ended recently and made me (and I'm sure many others) hungry for more. It seems like you lost interest in the series 9 months ago, and I don't blame you as I also lost interest in the series until I decided to marathon Second Season after it ended. It definitely blew my expectations away, so if you haven't already seen it I suggest you do as I'm sure you'll also love it. If you have already seen it, and you ever do feel like continuing to translate the LNs, would you please start translating from Final Season? Since there are only 4 novels to translate as opposed to 13, with 9 having been adapted into anime and would make your work load a lot smaller.

First of all js06, I just wanted to say thanks for going through all the work in translating the Toaru series (and many others) for us railgun/index fans who aren't very proficient in japanese. Now, as for the topic.... Myself and a few people I know have gotten into a little debate about how strong Othiinus really is. Some think her power to add filters is limited to the earth alone, while others think that she can effect the whole universe. To get to the point, I was a bit curious as to exactly what word was used to when the novel said that the world had ended, an exact example being this snippet from Othinus, ('''"Othinus shrugged. “Listen. The world has ended. It does not matter how. It is gone.'''")....I know that Japanese can be kind of wonkey and words can have multiple meanings, for instance, "hoshi" can mean both star and planet. So, throughout the novel what Kanji was used to refer to "the world" being destroyed, and in your opinion, what meaning did that kanji have in the context of the novel (basically, was it referring to "earth" or the "universe" when Othinus destroyed and recreated the world). Thanks in advance, and sorry for such an odd question.

Lord and God are only capitalized for God from the Bible, so there is no need to capitalize phrases like "my lord" or "abc is a god" though "Lord XYZ" would need to be capitalized since it's a term of address. Similarly, king should only be capitalized when it is a specific title, such as "King Kusanagi." Stuff like "as a king you should blah blah blah..." or "the king jumped up and down" should not be capitalized. It does get a bit subtle with statements like "George V is one of the kings of Britain" where "kings" is being used as a general noun, versus "George V is King of Britain" where "King of Britain" is a specific title. Hello, I've seen an edit you've made recently, and I want to confirm this, so I won't make this mistake myself. In this recent edit, "Though, I kind of doubt it." is changed back to "Though I kind of doubt it." 'Though', as I've learnt, can be used either as a conjunction or an adverb. When it functions as a conjunction, it should be connected to the previous sentence with a comma, for example: "I know what you mean, though I'm skeptical of the usage"; when it functions as an adverb, a comma after 'though' should be added like any other adverb, for example: "Though, I'm skeptical of the usage" or "I'm skeptical of the usage, though", in which the latter seems more common. In your edit, I believe you want the 'though' in your sentence to function as a conjunction instead of an adverb; however, when the sentence is not connected to the previous sentence (where I see it's rather difficult to do so), it becomes a fragmented sentence. Fragments can stand in modern writings, but I believe refraining from fragments and aiming for complete sentences are what one should pursue.

To reiterate myself, I don't mean to charge into your project or translation, I just want to confirm the usage of some words, as I'm seeing a lot of mistakes in my own stuff. and I'm also trying to improve myself as well. - Pudding321

"Without barely" has some Google hits, but relatively few (for comparison, "with barely" has about 100 times as many). Very few of those look like they'd be from any kind of edited text. The expression is weird given the ordinary meanings of "without" and "barely". In the Campione text, "barely stopping" seems OK since did in fact stop at the places at least briefly, for longer than if he had been simply passing through them. :Shizuka actually calls Godou "Onii-chan." Yeah, Volume 1 has a fair number of standardization issues because it had multiple translators, it was the first volume translated (fewer standards/conventions established), and it was translated from Chinese (so honorifics come from guesswork) with little (if any) crosschecking with the JP. I didn't start referencing the JP version until V3 so there might be some of those issues in V2 as well. Please change it to Onii-chan when Shizuka is addressing Godou.

:Since you're starting from the beginning, could you help edit all the double hyphens(--) to dashes(—)? Dashes should have no spaces before or after. The only exceptions are situations like: "Abcd xyz. —Kjlm..." where the dash follows a period, exclamation mark or question mark (which I don't think occurs very often in Campione anyway).

:Also, there's one language quirk that needs to be fixed. In eastern languages, one would often name the person you are talking to in a 3rd person manner, but that should be eliminated in English. Example: "I am surprised by Onii-chan's earnest diligence." --> "I am surprised by your earnest diligence, Onii-chan."

What have my creations done? What did they represent? When I became old and authority, wealth and fame were no longer useful, I finally understood.

:The original 闇精霊の少女 basically means "the girl who is the darkness spirit." I use "darkness spirit girl" because anything longer would be too unwieldy to repeat constantly.

:"Girl of the Dark Spirit" is a very literal but ambiguous choice because it could also mean a girl belonging to the dark spirit, or a girl who possesses the dark spirit.

:I'd say modify the chapter title for sure. Though as a title, it doesn't need to be identical to what keeps repeating in the text. But definitely, "Girl of the Dark Spirit" should be changed to something clearer. Volume 1 Chapter 1 is mostly done. There are some lines which I did not try to edit as they were... Uh, quite ''ambiguous''. If and when you have some free time please check them against the RAWs.
