I would like to remind everyone that LICENSES IN ENGLISH currently APPLY TO ALL LANGUAGES OF EUROPE.
That is unless a deal is made and the license is purchased. And no, it does not only apply to translating over from the english version anymore if it is commercially "inhibiting". I'd deem further translation would be.
Sick and unfair, but true.

Now, normally nobody would bother making a complaint...but we have already promised to cease and desist.
Would it not be better to completely stop? Arevwe willing to risk undue attention?
I worry how this will reflect on BT if it continues. :(

I'm neither blaming anyone, nor am I destroying anything. I am stating the facts.
Multilingual projects don't have anything to do with it, seriously..it's about the moral issue. Or rather, fuck the morals. It's about not making unwanted noise on licensed content. For the greater good of BT.
We won't be bothered as long as we don't cut someone's revenue. That's my worry, that some idiot sees this and goes " so that's why we don't sell anything in Poland, Germany aso..."

So in other words, yeah, projects in Norwegian, Lithuanian and freaking Esperanto do in fact commit copyright infringement but it's retarded to think that they do actual harm to the publishers. So I assume non-English projects are safe. And if stuff goes for the worse, of course remove them, but only then.

Well, I didnt take it put of the blue. In Sweden (where I live btw) , there has recently been some discussion on the matter. I presume you know the book publisher " bonniers"? They did raise a bit of a fuss about it at a conference and things seems to have begin picking up the pace. The book mentioned at that time was bungaku shoujo btw. I'm pretty sure they don't hold the license or anything, but they went on about how it didnt eet estimated sales and bla bla....boring really. Point; They wouldnt have looked into it if they weren't concerned.

So there is ample reason, but I agree with you; it is a very remote possibility of anything happening. The moral issue is pretty clear to me however, hard work or not. But then again; I don't want to actually remove your project. Iwhat I really want is that other no other licensed project is started.Because one series is fine, three even. A lot however...that's an issue waiting to happen.
You've been reasonable - I respect your opinion and find it valid. And indeed most people just want me to shut up and don't make a fuzz. I won't however.
I want to take active part in the direction this site goes...and people don't like that. I'd not like people poking around my buisness either.

I'm just curious, because they simply don't exist here in Lithuania. And by that I mean that there haven't been even a single title from this [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_light_novels list] released, so that's why I don't really think I'm committing a crime here. I heard the situation is similar with most of the minor languages, so it's kinda interesting for me if this Bonnier Group has an actual basis to start a witch hunt or just want attention pretending to be some sort of a victim like the U.S. entertainment industries.

Viva la resistance indeed. As of yet there are no Light novels that have been translated, mainly because they don't sell we'll enought copies. They do however sell extremelly well considering the amount of fans. That's what really set this off I believe, that otaku have an urge to collect related goods, something limited in my experience the west to comic books, warhammer and gaming apparel. The only translated VN I have been able to procure are actually the ones issued by yen press, the rest are all imports from source. But the demand is there however.
On a related note, Sweden has had an enormous upswing in anime related goods during the last few years, and as far as I can see this is a trend that will continue through all of the northern countries. If you'd attended a con here now and ten years ago...the difference is just appallingly huge.
And all big bookstores stock manga, a good bit of it even...and shoujo to boot.
In fact, the real stoppers now are the Japanese themselves. They they don't want to take this to an international stage.
And that's were we stand imho, a need, a provider and goods that aren't provided.
In another ten-fifteen years we will probably have a very different market. That's why we should enjoy this good natured community while we can.

Not according to anything I am aware of. Translates from Chinese; and none of our series. Did some work on monogatari recently thou.
On the other hand, having relations to this translator would be great!! Someone should ask to have links put in referring to the series and homepage.

On Infinite Stratos. Young Japanese women or school girls usually say "Ehhh~" just to sound cute or in a cutesy manner in Japanese society, especially in conversations between fellow woman/girls. So its better to keep them in most cases in IS. It's staying true to the author's original intent since "Whaaat" isn't very cute sounding for the most part, although it does fit in the sentence. Therefore, I suggest that we keep Ehhh~ the way it is unless there's a better alternative than "Whaaat" and "Huuuh" to replace "Ehhh~" in IS. I don't think Ehhh~ ''always'' denotes cutsyness, it can denote extreme surprise or tired surprise like Cecilia being bothered by the girls over her makeup, dress sense and perfume and her saying it (sometimes in her mind) out of exasperation. The only times it denotes cuteness is when the character tries to appear childish. Sometimes it just denotes surprise. It depends on the circumstances. But since there are multiple forms in english that can replace it we should take them into account. There are many variables. Wouldn't keeping the Eh's be fine too, instead of replacing them with Huh or What? It doesn't really detract from the meaning as whole in the Light Novel, some english translation projects like Toaru no Majutsu just keep the "Eh" the way it is, and I know its not commonly used in many English novels, but the Eh's are not that big of an issue. “Ehh!? Hmm... I'm all good for a compromise, normally. But only when the "~" is used and there are ''more'' than one "h". At least until I find something good enough in the english language. See, I'm using both my decision and FoxReplace to change the "eh"s (decision for vague ones and FoxReplace for repetitive changes) and FoxReplace can only be picky in certain ways. Sorry, this is something I can't help. Currently it is set to change all "eh" ''words'' to "huh" but not any with more than one "h" so I can make the decision to ignore them, but I think only those with the ~ until I find something fitting. I hope js06 will find more time to work at this project soon, it is an amazing piece imo.

This is by far the most "epic" of stories I have seen in recent years. The off-focus of various economic and agricultural issues makes one think of Isuna Hasakuras "Spice and Wolf"
Furthermore it touches on the once-popular hero/demon king relationship that was such a big deal back in the days.
Further translation of it would truly be a boon to all humanity.

Translator here. Looks fine to me, too. But I beg to differ on not being too aggressive: a translator should be as transparent as possible IMO. So feel free to change any passages that flow poorly or have mistakes in them. For an example, [http://www.baka-tsuki.org/project/index.php?title=Tabi_ni_Deyou%3ADream&action=historysubmit&diff=107354&oldid=107340 that's how I personally love my edits], since it sounds English and I can brush up my own use of English and translating by comparing with my original translation, but that's just me. As the deletion log does not mention them being deleted (and they are not in the file list), I doubt that were ever uploaded, especially as the pages themselves don't appear to reference them. 7-14 got animated so buying the DVD's gives you a good idea of the story, I think the translator jumped ahead because they are interested in newer unanimated stories.

I think you're alienating the dozens of translators eager to work on this project by saying you can power through 10 years and 8 months of konno oyuki's work. as a translator myself I know it can take forever working on a single line to make it fit in the scope of the english language. bakatsuki should be the central hub for all the translations being done so far. it should be the collaborative efforts of all the translators and editors into forming a cohesive readable experience for all marimite fans. we can achieve that by observing haruhi's staff page. we need a supervisor who can keep up with Tlers and editors. we can establish more thorough translation and editing guidelines. we need someone to properly ask okazu for use and revising of her works, since she literally did 6 volumes already. I'm not saying it should be me; I want to translate too, but we have to face the scope of this series, which is four times larger than haruhi, not counting the stories not in novels, yet in the four years since the anime started, which i assume was when popularity increased, there is no cohesive translation staff. I just want to make sure there is one place for fans to find/read/enjoy the original version of marimite before it is licensed, which god knows what kind of guidelines they'll follow. I'm still going to translate, starting from the last chapter. Whether I bother posting it here or not is up to how well received and implemented these plans are to the marimite fans, current staff included. gokigenyou.

You could add it as a preview I guess, as the people over the Zero no Tsukaima section do. It is not a bad translation though, they are by Harukano from Otakyu, the same guy who did the Juuni Kokki translations until it got licensed.

I was wondering if it would be possible to keep dialogue line and the explanatory author's line in the same paragraph. Because else it is a bit too confusing - someone speaks a complete thought, and then we are told who said it, but this two things seem unrelated.

Hate doing this, but I'm gonna give up for at least two months. I'm graduating in three months but I've got nowhere to go afterward... which is a big problem. Hopefully I'll figure out what I'm going to do this summer and beyond, but until then translating isn't even at the back of my mind. I just don't have the time nor presence of mind to do it right now... if I forced myself I wouldn't be paying the work enough respect, and I honestly would rather not have this hanging over my head. Hopefully I'll figure things out in the next few months, and if/when I do (or if I end up being a rounin) I'll poke my head back in and see if I'm still needed. I've noticed that the first five translated volumes use sœur while as far as I can tell most of the later ones use soeur. I prefer the more French style sœur anyone object to me changing them all to that so there is consistency across all the volumes?

Sukoshi also likes to use the French spelling for words. It's problematic because most Americans can't read French (myself included), whereas the rest of the English-speaking has some familiarity with it. I guess it's a good idea, since theoretically the Japanese loan word came from the French. If we do, I'll need to memorize the ASCII code for making that character. xD ~Rei

I think I speak for most people here when I say, we just want to be able to read the story. While Soeur is more visually appealing to my English eye, if you insist on the other, I don't think anyone will complain. Seriously, have you not heard of basing something off of something? The author clearly based Jörmungant OFF of Jörmungandr, but it obviously isn't.
In the novels, it is written "ヨルムンガント". Jörmungandr is "ヨルムンガンド".
The author didn't mean anything and make a mistake, he did this on purpose. So it should be "t"

just a side note a d at the end of a word in german and similar languages is pronounced as a t so the author is using the phonetic rendition (and according to my literature on norse myths Jörmungand doesnt have an r on the end) also for the wikiphiles the Jörmungand article is preceded by this warning "This article does not cite any references or sources." as opposed to my book "Norse Mythology a guide to the gods, heroes, rituals, and beliefs" by John Lindow.
Come to think of it (though it has been bugging me for a while) is the r on the end of Gandalfr there in the book or did someone translate it to that, because if its not in the book it likely follows Tolkien's rendition of Gandalf, as Tolkien was a scholar in norse mythology.

Well, consulting a Kanji dictionary, the kanjis in 怪鳥 are 'mystery' and 'bird/fowl/poultry'. As some days ago S3-Ch7 was released 'The Ball of Sleipnir', there appeared a big airplane-like ship that was referred as 'a mysterious bird'. For that reason I guess this names fits with the chapter title.

The kanas in "Aboard the 『オストラント』号" can be romanized as "''Osutoranto''". Now that S3-Ch8 was released, in English fansubbed version it is referred as "Ostland", something that was related with the East (however, it doesn't fit too much with East, 'cause Ost has to do much more with West [''Oeste'' in spanish]). It is the name of an airship (the one mentioned in Vol. 9 Ch9) named after Saito's origin, through the East, by %"%·/&%·.
As for the kanji, 号, it can be read as ごう (gou), meaning number, issue, sobriquet, pen-name... well, i don't know what sobriquet nor pen-name mean... but, ごう can also be kanjiized (new word! :D) as 壕, meaning trench, dugout, air-raid shelter... well, if those meanings are right, maybe someone could choose one of them... but I think for the name of that thing, the "Ostland" name fits well :D

In the chinese RAWs, its directly translated into Eastwards. Which makes sense with what's stated above. And the 号 is normally added at the name of Ships... kind of like Type, or Class kind of thing.

The author didn't mean anything and make a mistake, he did this on purpose. So it should be "t"

Well, consulting a Kanji dictionary, the kanjis in 怪鳥 are 'mystery' and 'bird/fowl/poultry'. As some days ago S3-Ch7 was released 'The Ball of Sleipnir', there appeared a big airplane-like ship that was referred as 'a mysterious bird'. For that reason I guess this names fits with the chapter title.

The kanas in "Aboard the 『オストラント』号" can be romanized as "''Osutoranto''". Now that S3-Ch8 was released, in English fansubbed version it is referred as "Ostland", something that was related with the East (however, it doesn't fit too much with East, 'cause Ost has to do much more with West [''Oeste'' in spanish]). It is the name of an airship (the one mentioned in Vol. 9 Ch9) named after Saito's origin, through the East, by %"%·/&%·.
As for the kanji, 号, it can be read as ごう (gou), meaning number, issue, sobriquet, pen-name... well, i don't know what sobriquet nor pen-name mean... but, ごう can also be kanjiized (new word! :D) as 壕, meaning trench, dugout, air-raid shelter... well, if those meanings are right, maybe someone could choose one of them... but I think for the name of that thing, the "Ostland" name fits well :D

Now that S3-Ch8 was released, in English fansubbed version it is referred as "Ostland", something that was related with the East (however, it doesn't fit too much with East, 'cause Ost has to do much more with West [''Oeste'' in spanish]). It is the name of an airship (the one mentioned in Vol. 9 Ch9) named after Saito's origin, through the East, by %"%·/&%·.
As for the kanji, 号, it can be read as ごう (gou), meaning number, issue, sobriquet, pen-name... well, i don't know what sobriquet nor pen-name mean... but, ごう can also be kanjiized (new word! :D) as 壕, meaning trench, dugout, air-raid shelter... well, if those meanings are right, maybe someone could choose one of them... but I think for the name of that thing, the "Ostland" name fits well :D

You are correct that it should be "For", not "During". :)

Shinto priest sounds rather awkward in this context, making it seems as if there is some Japanese culture in the world of Zero no Tsukaima. The kanji, 神官, that I presume it is using (I've seen the Chinese version) can apply to priest from other countries as well, such as roman priests. Judging from the theme of this novel and that the priest are from a country similar to
the Roman Empire, using a term equivalent to roman priest sounds more appropriate.

Seriously, have you not heard of basing something off of something? The author clearly based Jörmungant OFF of Jörmungandr, but it obviously isn't.
In the novels, it is written "ヨルムンガント". Jörmungandr is "ヨルムンガンド".
The author didn't mean anything and make a mistake, he did this on purpose. So it should be "t"

just a side note a d at the end of a word in german and similar languages is pronounced as a t so the author is using the phonetic rendition (and according to my literature on norse myths Jörmungand doesnt have an r on the end) also for the wikiphiles the Jörmungand article is preceded by this warning "This article does not cite any references or sources." as opposed to my book "Norse Mythology a guide to the gods, heroes, rituals, and beliefs" by John Lindow.
Come to think of it (though it has been bugging me for a while) is the r on the end of Gandalfr there in the book or did someone translate it to that, because if its not in the book it likely follows Tolkien's rendition of Gandalf, as Tolkien was a scholar in norse mythology.

Well, consulting a Kanji dictionary, the kanjis in 怪鳥 are 'mystery' and 'bird/fowl/poultry'. As some days ago S3-Ch7 was released 'The Ball of Sleipnir', there appeared a big airplane-like ship that was referred as 'a mysterious bird'. For that reason I guess this names fits with the chapter title.
