:Yeah, I get what you mean, I'm a bit emotional here. TT_TT
:If the copyright inquisition does show up, I think BT has the full right to use this law thing I saw on Good Copy, Bad Copy called "de minimis" which basically means "The law does not concern itself with trifles". So in other words, yeah, projects in Norwegian, Lithuanian and freaking Esperanto do in fact commit copyright infringement but it's retarded to think that they do actual harm to the publishers. Also, my Lithuanian Haruhi project been active for about two years, even though the English one was taken down, and I've got no complains yet. Others are even older than that. So I assume non-English projects are safe. And if stuff goes for the worse, of course remove them, but only then.
:But that's only my opinion. I like everybody else just want people to refrain from killing other peoples hard work for no damn reason whatsoever, okay? --Soryusu 03:12, 4 April 2012 (CDT)

Well, I didnt take it put of the blue. In Sweden (where I live btw) , there has recently been some discussion on the matter. I presume you know the book publisher " bonniers"? They did raise a bit of a fuss about it at a conference and things seems to have begin picking up the pace. The book mentioned at that time was bungaku shoujo btw. I'm pretty sure they don't hold the license or anything, but they went on about how it didnt eet estimated sales and bla bla....boring really. Point; They wouldnt have looked into it if they weren't concerned.

So there is ample reason, but I agree with you; it is a very remote possibility of anything happening. The moral issue is pretty clear to me however, hard work or not. But then again; I don't want to actually remove your project. Iwhat I really want is that other no other licensed project is started.Because one series is fine, three even. A lot however...that's an issue waiting to happen.
You've been reasonable - I respect your opinion and find it valid. And indeed most people just want me to shut up and don't make a fuzz. I won't however.
I want to take active part in the direction this site goes...and people don't like that. I'd not like people poking around my buisness either.
I'd just wish they'd understand the good intentions behind it. Okay?

I feel this closes any argument between us soryusu. Hope it satisfied you. If enought people read this, I will be too.

:May I just ask you something unrelated – how are light novels doing in Sweden? Like, are there many releases, their quality, newness, etc.? I'm just curious, because they simply don't exist here in Lithuania. And by that I mean that there haven't been even a single title from this list released, so that's why I don't really think I'm committing a crime here. I heard the situation is similar with most of the minor languages, so it's kinda interesting for me if this Bonnier Group has an actual basis to start a witch hunt or just want attention pretending to be some sort of a victim like the U.S. entertainment industries.
:Anyway, it was nice talking with you. Good luck with your La Resistance :) --Soryusu 10:07, 6 April 2012 (CDT)

Viva la resistance indeed. As of yet there are no Light novels that have been translated, mainly because they don't sell we'll enought copies. They do however sell extremelly well considering the amount of fans. That's what really set this off I believe, that otaku have an urge to collect related goods, something limited in my experience the west to comic books, warhammer and gaming apparel. The only translated VN I have been able to procure are actually the ones issued by yen press, the rest are all imports from source. But the demand is there however.
On a related note, Sweden has had an enormous upswing in anime related goods during the last few years, and as far as I can see this is a trend that will continue through all of the northern countries. If you'd attended a con here now and ten years ago...the difference is just appallingly huge.
And all big bookstores stock manga, a good bit of it even...and shoujo to boot.
In fact, the real stoppers now are the Japanese themselves. They they don't want to take this to an international stage.
And that's were we stand imho, a need, a provider and goods that aren't provided.
In another ten-fifteen years we will probably have a very different market. That's why we should enjoy this good natured community while we can.

Ehhh~
On Infinite Stratos. Young Japanese women or school girls usually say "Ehhh~" just to sound cute or in a cutesy manner in Japanese society, especially in conversations between fellow woman/girls. So its better to keep them in most cases in IS. It's staying true to the author's original intent since "Whaaat" isn't very cute sounding for the most part, although it does fit in the sentence. Therefore, I suggest that we keep Ehhh~ the way it is unless there's a better alternative than "Whaaat" and "Huuuh" to replace "Ehhh~" in IS. The "Ehhh~" is somewhat similar to the exclusively Japanese sound effects for something cute like Funya, Funyari, Nyaa, Gao and etc. -Hiro Hayase 01:18, 8 September 2011 (CDT)

I don't think Ehhh~ always denotes cutsyness, it can denote extreme surprise or tired surprise like Cecilia being bothered by the girls over her makeup, dress sense and perfume and her saying it (sometimes in her mind) out of exasperation. The only times it denotes cuteness is when the character tries to appear childish. Sometimes it just denotes surprise. It depends on the circumstances. But since there are multiple forms in english that can replace it we should take them into account. There are many variables. Zero2001 - Talk - 07:50, 8 September 2011 (CDT)

But then again "Eh" is an interjection in the english language. But it isn't used as much. On the other hand the cute Ehh~ you are talking about fits this type of girl more, see the whole thing but 1:05 specifically. Cecilia or the other girls are not that type, well maybe Laura but... no not that level after all. Sigh, I'm sorry but in light of the overall I can't say it fits with cuteness; tiredness or exasperation maybe, but not cuteness. Zero2001 - Talk - 11:56, 8 September 2011 (CDT)

Wouldn't keeping the Eh's be fine too, instead of replacing them with Huh or What? It doesn't really detract from the meaning as whole in the Light Novel, some english translation projects like Toaru no Majutsu just keep the "Eh" the way it is, and I know its not commonly used in many English novels, but the Eh's are not that big of an issue. “Ehh!? Why!? Why are you here!? World War III… The Arctic Ocean… Y-you were dead… Wh-what is going on…!?” Misaka Mikoto from NT volume 2, chapter 1. Although I agree with Hiro that sometimes its used in a cutesy way by girls, but other times its used for being suprised in an almost comical way. -Anonymous Reader ( 160.253.128.7 14:03, 8 September 2011 (CDT) )

Yeah... but, you see... It's already been done and now to change everything back would be excessive or leave it as it currently is and not change "eh" to "huh" or "what" in present or future chapters kind of goes against conformity. Sigh. I do get what you're saying, I really do. It's just I think... it's too late in the game to change the rules, y'know what I mean don't you? Besides I don't think Hiro Hayase intends to change all "eh"s back, only the "Ehh*~"s the ones with a drawn out sound. Zero2001 - Talk - 14:35, 8 September 2011 (CDT)
Agreed, a compromise will do here. Just leaving Ehh~ with the drawn out sound the way it is will suffice, its too late to change everything back now anyways. Well at least this is sorted. -Hiro Hayase 19:01, 8 September 2011 (CDT)
Hmm... I'm all good for a compromise, normally. But only when the "~" is used and there are more than one "h". At least until I find something good enough in the english language. See, I'm using both my decision and FoxReplace to change the "eh"s (decision for vague ones and FoxReplace for repetitive changes) and FoxReplace can only be picky in certain ways. Sorry, this is something I can't help. Currently it is set to change all "eh" words to "huh" but not any with more than one "h" so I can make the decision to ignore them, but I think only those with the ~ until I find something fitting. What happened to the translations of these? Someone seems to have jumped ahead and skipped many of the volumes in the middle to work on the volume 20+ ones.

7-14 got animated so buying the DVD's gives you a good idea of the story, I think the translator jumped ahead because they are interested in newer unanimated stories.
Other Marimite Translations
Is there any interest on Seki's part to merge or link other translations done by say Okazu into the Bakatsuki project? I'm not sure if you're insistent upon your own translations or not, so it's just me bouncing around a question.

-Sukoshi

Right now I'm leaning towards insisting on my own translations.

-Seki

I think you're alienating the dozens of translators eager to work on this project by saying you can power through 10 years and 8 months of konno oyuki's work. as a translator myself I know it can take forever working on a single line to make it fit in the scope of the english language. bakatsuki should be the central hub for all the translations being done so far. it should be the collaborative efforts of all the translators and editors into forming a cohesive readable experience for all marimite fans. we can achieve that by observing haruhi's staff page. we need a supervisor who can keep up with Tlers and editors. we can establish more thorough translation and editing guidelines. we need someone to properly ask okazu for use and revising of her works, since she literally did 6 volumes already. I'm not saying it should be me; I want to translate too, but we have to face the scope of this series, which is four times larger than haruhi, not counting the stories not in novels, yet in the four years since the anime started, which i assume was when popularity increased, there is no cohesive translation staff. I just want to make sure there is one place for fans to find/read/enjoy the original version of marimite before it is licensed, which god knows what kind of guidelines they'll follow. I'm still going to translate, starting from the last chapter. Whether I bother posting it here or not is up to how well received and implemented these plans are to the marimite fans, current staff included. gokigenyou.

-AlphaUltima (recent TL work in Hidamari Sketch x365 with SpoonSubs and SZS with Plumcity/Entropy)

Honestly, if someone else wants to organize stuff they can do so, especially considering I'd underestimated how quickly my free time would dwindle as I near graduation. Because my primary motivation with the project was just to practice, that sort of administrative work is something I'd not wanted - and still really don't want - to have to deal with.

-Seki

okay, first thing is updating the list to volume 33. then i'll ask okazu for her blessing in using her scripts for this project. we'll figure it out from there.

-AU

She said yes. Here's the full email:

Hello -You're more than welcome to use those translations. I actually have one more, as well, that hasn't yet been posted to Okazu. So, the 18th books has also been translated - this one by Rei and Sukoshi. I'll post that soon to Okazu, so you can take it from there. Cheers, Erica

Just finished updating the novel lists. I'll start breaking the novel sections down as I already have them all in text files already.

Vol 12 discussion
Wouldn't it be convenient to link to what is done from volume 12?

I can add it, but when I get to v12, I'm probably going to replace it with my own, should I add it anyways? :< Or have like a link next to v12, or something? >_>

-Seki

You could add it as a preview I guess, as the people over the Zero no Tsukaima section do. It is not a bad translation though, they are by Harukano from Otakyu, the same guy who did the Juuni Kokki translations until it got licensed.

-Proto

I added it next to v12. It's not whether it's a good or bad translation, so much as I'm just intending to power through everything nonetheless. We'll see if my stance changes later on, when the novelty idea of translating 30+ volumes wears off ;p Bunch of stylistic differences and all that I assume exist, since there were no guidelines agreed upon or anything.

-Seki

I have some scripts from other volumes, but I think getting someone to copy-paste these onto the wiki would be a PITA.
Hi,
I would like to help and unite parts of Marimite into single volumes, like it was done with Marimite Volume 1. I am not sure if I can commit such - let's say - big interference without being in Baka-Tsuki's team. I bothered you on irc channel but my connection wasn't so great at the time.
Uh, I don't think anyone would mind if you did that, but I (still) haven't finished going through my friend's proof-reads of v1 and vV2, which is why I was hesitant with doing it for v1 and why I haven't really done it for v2. If you're willing to put up with the eventual nit-picky changes that I'd prolly only do on the original chapters/parts for the time being, go for it. I don't know how (or whether to) upload single-volume versions of your translations, but I recently converted your translation of Ibara no Mori to a single volume. I did it for myself so I could read it on a Kindle, so it lacks links back to baka-tsuki. Conversion is easy, I'd be happy to do it for earlier volumes once you're done with edits. Lemme know and I can send you HTML, Kindle/Mobi-compatible .prc files, whatever.

I've hidden the single-volume Ibara no Mori on ziggr.com for a little while, in case you want it: http://ziggr.com/maria-sama/baka-tsuki/03/ I'll probably pull it down in a few weeks.
Dialogue
I was wondering if it would be possible to keep dialogue line and the explanatory author's line in the same paragraph. Because else it is a bit too confusing - someone speaks a complete thought, and then we are told who said it, but this two things seem unrelated.
If it is fine with you I would have liked to edit already translated chapters this way. Just punctuation, nothing else =)
-Iatheia

Umm, unless other people also find it confusing, I'd prefer to leave it as is, because of author's style. So if anyone else feels the same, feel free to leave a message, as like an informal poll or something. If it's a big enough problem we could open a poll in the forum instead, I guess.
Hopefully I'll figure out what I'm going to do this summer and beyond, but until then translating isn't even at the back of my mind. I just don't have the time nor presence of mind to do it right now... if I forced myself I wouldn't be paying the work enough respect, and I honestly would rather not have this hanging over my head. Hopefully I'll figure things out in the next few months, and if/when I do (or if I end up being a rounin) I'll poke my head back in and see if I'm still needed. Until then, gokigenyou, and thanks for putting up with all the difficulties. == Soeur vs Sœur ==

I've noticed that the first five translated volumes use sœur while as far as I can tell most of the later ones use soeur. I prefer the more French style sœur anyone object to me changing them all to that so there is consistency across all the volumes?

Sukoshi also likes to use the French spelling for words. It's problematic because most Americans can't read French (myself included), whereas the rest of the English-speaking has some familiarity with it. I guess it's a good idea, since theoretically the Japanese loan word came from the French. If we do, I'll need to memorize the ASCII code for making that character. xD ~Rei

Often when French words appear in English texts they appear in italics. Would this also be a good idea? ~Rei

I think I speak for most people here when I say, we just want to be able to read the story. While Soeur is more visually appealing to my English eye, if you insist on the other, I don't think anyone will complain. Proper French spelling aside, by this point we've long since come to recognize what it means anyway so I doubt it matters. ~Molenir

Still, I think we should have consistency for the new readers. ~ Novium

Proper Names
According to Wikipedia articles, country name is Romalia, not Romaria or anything; most likely, author meant Jörmungandr. If we translate proper names rather than transcribe them (Louise vs. Ruizu, Albion vs. Arubion etc.), let's be consistent where possible.
About Romaria/Romalia:

Honestly, you can translate it either way. I don't care if you bother to change this since there isn't proof which is correct. Same goes for Gallia.

Though a note to you, "because Wikipedia said so" does not, at all, mean anything. Wikipedia is changeable by everyone, after all.

--

About Jörmungandr:
"most likely, author meant Jörmungandr"

Seriously, have you not heard of basing something off of something? The author clearly based Jörmungant OFF of Jörmungandr, but it obviously isn't.
In the novels, it is written "ヨルムンガント". Jörmungandr is "ヨルムンガンド".
The author didn't mean anything and make a mistake, he did this on purpose. So it should be "t"

~Serenade beta

just a side note a d at the end of a word in german and similar languages is pronounced as a t so the author is using the phonetic rendition (and according to my literature on norse myths Jörmungand doesnt have an r on the end) also for the wikiphiles the Jörmungand article is preceded by this warning "This article does not cite any references or sources." as opposed to my book "Norse Mythology a guide to the gods, heroes, rituals, and beliefs" by John Lindow.
Come to think of it (though it has been bugging me for a while) is the r on the end of Gandalfr there in the book or did someone translate it to that, because if its not in the book it likely follows Tolkien's rendition of Gandalf, as Tolkien was a scholar in norse mythology.
Vol. 9 Chapter 9 Title
Well, consulting a Kanji dictionary, the kanjis in 怪鳥 are 'mystery' and 'bird/fowl/poultry'. As some days ago S3-Ch7 was released 'The Ball of Sleipnir', there appeared a big airplane-like ship that was referred as 'a mysterious bird'. == Vol. 13 Chapter 13 Title ==

The kanas in "Aboard the 『オストラント』号" can be romanized as "Osutoranto". Now that S3-Ch8 was released, in English fansubbed version it is referred as "Ostland", something that was related with the East (however, it doesn't fit too much with East, 'cause Ost has to do much more with West [Oeste in spanish]). It is the name of an airship (the one mentioned in Vol. 9 Ch9) named after Saito's origin, through the East, by %"%·/&%·.
As for the kanji, 号, it can be read as ごう (gou), meaning number, issue, sobriquet, pen-name... well, i don't know what sobriquet nor pen-name mean... but, ごう can also be kanjiized (new word! :D) as 壕, meaning trench, dugout, air-raid shelter... well, if those meanings are right, maybe someone could choose one of them... but I think for the name of that thing, the "Ostland" name fits well :D

~MD

In the chinese RAWs, its directly translated into Eastwards. Which makes sense with what's stated above. And the 号 is normally added at the name of Ships... kind of like Type, or Class kind of thing.

At least the chinese do haha...

~Xorius

Btw Ost is east in German and given that much of this comes from norse mythology german is a better reference language although finnish or danish is better still

so... the name of V10,Ch1 would be "The Ostland", and V13,Ch3 "Aboard the Ostland", right? or we write Eastwards instead of Ostland?? (btw, danish i reckon... but finnish never. totally diffrent *-) ) ~MD

Translation
I've seen numerous times that the word 'lady killer' has been used to describe good looking people like King of Gallia, Guiche and Julio. Native english speakers will think why do those guys kill females, but its actually a direct translation from jap/chi that means "womaniser". Hence i propose for all lady killer to be changed into womaniser which would be more appropriate??~Lime

Well, there's the term "drop-dead gorgeous" but doesn't really mean that people drop dead at their sight. Hehe, just my two cents. Anyways, I'd think it can go either way. Smooth operator, maybe? But some may not understand, so what to do.....-zultek

I'm a native English speaker, and I got it quite fine. But for others' sake, I shall voice in. There's "ladies' man" as a term with the same meaning; "Playboy" too.

I like the term ladies' man... implies good looking and also a womaniser. I can't see any direct translation off the chinese word lady killer.. propose a change? ~Lime

-----
In fact, "Lady killer" is a term I have often come across in other works and even movies. In fact the famous Agent 007 is described as a ladykiller in one of the movies, so I don't hink this is a cause of concern. Sincerly ~Jim
About some Abbreviations
When i read the article long ago, i didn't know (nor do i know now) the meaning of these acronyms A.W.O.L, M.I.A, K.I.A... there are some translators from there... what are they?

~MD

They are, respectively, military acronyms for 'absent without leave' 'missing in action' and 'killed in action'

Oo that's not meaning literally, right? ~MD

:AWOL means the soldier has absconded from their post or deserted.
:MIA means the person is missing, presumed dead. No body has been found or at least not positively identified.
:KIA means a body has been found that either is the person named, or has been identified as that person.
Volume 12, part 3 Name
Right To Use Saito during a Day. Shouldn't that be Right to Use Saito For A Day?

I don't know what the japanese title is (I don't have this volume.) But in common English usage, you'd use For rather than During, as the statement is written in the future tense.

:Past = Saito Used For a Day
:Present= Using Saito For a Day
:Future = Use Saito For a Day

JBV^_^

eh, I think "Use Saito For a Day" is imperative, not Future, which is either "Will Use Saito For a Day" or "Going to Use Saito For a Day" regardless, "Right to Use Saito For a Day" is a noun, and has no tense: changing the tense of an incorporated clause would make it nonsense: "Right to Saito Used For a Day" if bad grammar. You are correct that it should be "For", not "During". :)

Shinto Priest
Shinto priest sounds rather awkward in this context, making it seems as if there is some Japanese culture in the world of Zero no Tsukaima. The kanji, 神官, that I presume it is using (I've seen the Chinese version) can apply to priest from other countries as well, such as roman priests. Judging from the theme of this novel and that the priest are from a country similar to
the Roman Empire, using a term equivalent to roman priest sounds more appropriate.

http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/神官

Volume 8 Chapter 6
I just want to verify if this was the intended interruption in the Japanese version.

“Indeed. However, there is no sparring partner…”

“Aarah. What if there were an expert? You lose even against kids who can swing a sword only a little.”

In the Chinese version, it actually says something like:

"Really? But it is still useless against those mercenaries"

"That's obvious. How else are they going to make a living if they lose to a kid who barely knows swordsmanship."
I bet this is what Saito would say "I acknowledge the fact men make good pets and women rule the world! (So did men once)
I'm more than happy to let women rule the world, but they have to be willing to let me wear a dress with undergarments!! (Ankle fans and lipstick optional of course) You can make me sleep on a bed of hay and beat me with a whip for little to no reason, among other things. Also, you can treat me like a dog, get naked in front of me, and even make me dress you and still make me wash all of your clothes including your underwear."

As every book has it's original title, couldn't it be possible to write also the name of the chapter in Japanese? It doesn't matter if it's not in the Main Page, but at least somewhere to be read, plz. Maybe here it can be written... :)

For that reason I guess this names fits with the chapter title.

For that reason I guess this names fits with the chapter title.

Vol. 13 Chapter 13 Title

Right To Use Saito during a Day. Shouldn't that be Right to Use Saito For A Day?

I don't know what the japanese title is (I don't have this volume.) But in common English usage, you'd use For rather than During, as the statement is written in the future tense.

AFAICT, it was translation of the very first chapter, which doesn't make sense now...
Yesterday I posted this here. A unregistered undid my edits which is an action I would think only a administrator would have the rights to do. In the Baka-Tsuki disclaimer it says -" This wiki is done with the intention to A) Improve my(c) English writing skills. B) To provide a storage space for fans of the translated works(a) so that the fans can promote these works(a) C) To attract more readers to make English licencing(d) possible "

For that reason I guess this names fits with the chapter title.

Vol. 13 Chapter 13 Title

~Lime
eh, I think "Use Saito For a Day" is imperative, not Future, which is either "Will Use Saito For a Day" or "Going to Use Saito For a Day" regardless, "Right to Use Saito For a Day" is a noun, and has no tense: changing the tense of an incorporated clause would make it nonsense: "Right to Saito Used For a Day" if bad grammar.

How else are they going to make a living if they lose to a kid who barely knows swordsmanship."

is Zero no Tsukaima has been abondened?
Letter(s) of Appreciation
You know, I don't think there is anyone who has truly written how much they appreciate you translators efforts, or at least not enough.
That's why I would like to thank all the translators and editors for an excellent job, as well as to commend all the time you have spent on translating the 11+ light novels so far. I also encourage as many readers to write a small thanks as further motivation.
Vol.16 Ch10 Title 元素の兄弟
Well, not japanese-speaker, but i reckon the translation for that is "Siblings of the Element[s]". First thought of "brothers", but since we dont know yet if all are male, siblings is a better option. And "Elements" suits better.

As for me, i'm including this translation [in spanish version] until someone demonstrates it's not, jeje )=P

greetings for all :D
