== History ==
''Kara no Kyoukai'' ("空の境界") is a series of stories written by Kinoko Nasu (奈須きのこ) with illustrations by Takeshi Takeuchi (武内崇).

The first five chapters were posted online on Nasu and Takeuchi's dojin website "Takebouki (竹箒)" starting Oct 1998, and the last two chapters being released at [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comiket Comiket] 56 in 1999. In 2001, part of the story was included in "[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsukihime_PLUS-DISK Tsukihime PLUS-DISK (月姫PLUS-DISC)]," created by [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TYPE-MOON TYPE-MOON], the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doujin doujin] circle Nasu and Takeuchi joined. The story gained huge popularity, and the doujinshi edition of the stories saw release on December 30, 2001 at [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comiket Comiket] 61.

==Story Synopsis==

Regios are moving cities, sheltering humanity on the barren and polluted Earth that is populated by Filth Monsters. Tired of fighting monsters and for a reason not yet revealed, Layfon left his home city to arrive at Zuellni, a city which specializes in academics and was inhabitated only by students. Full of the expectation of living a normal life, he was tested on the first day of his arrival. Caught up in a fight that was rapidly getting out of hand, Layfon settled the commotion without anyone's help. Spotted by the Student President for his martial prowess, Layfon was forced to enter the 17th platoon.

Once again, Layfon was forced back into the world of Filth Monsters and defending the city he lived in. But the secrets of this world had yet to surface...

Konoha Inoue is a seemingly normal senior high 2nd year student. His high school life, other than a hinted incident 2 years ago, can be summed up as normal- if one can dismissed the secret fact that he used to be a female bestselling romance author. Due to an incident, however, he has now vowed never to write again.

This continued on until he was forced to join the literary club by the literary club president, the 3rd year female student Amano Tooko, a beautiful girl who has a taste of eating literary works.

==Synopsis==
Konoha and Amano's daily life were interrupted when a 1st year student, Takeda Chia, asked the Literary Club to help her with her love life- she has a crush on her senpai and wants the literary club to write her a love confession letter. The club president agreed and Konoha is tasked with helping Takeda.

As the story progresses, however, certain facts appeared and Konoha became increasingly unease. Who is Takeda's senpai? What is Takeda hiding? What does all these have to do with a student who committed suicide 10 years ago? As he and Amano dive deeper into the mystery, they find themselves surrounded by lies, betrayals, deceits, deficiencies in human nature, and their grim resolutions.

==Story Synopsis==

Regios are moving cities, sheltering humanity on the barren and polluted Earth that is populated by Filth Monsters. Tired of fighting monsters and for a reason not yet revealed, Layfon left his home city to arrive at Zuellni, a city which specializes in academics and was inhabitated only by students. Full of the expectation of living a normal life, he was tested on the first day of his arrival. I was wondering about which tense the story is supposed to be told in. It seems like it keeps flipping between present and past.

I don't really know what it should be in, there are some sentences that can only make sense in one tense. It might be best to just translate each sentence by itself and use the tense used in the original. -Kelnos

I tried to retranslate it as below. I think the adverb somehow got misplaced in the earlier translation.
I still don't know about tensing issues because most of the time it sounds better in past tense but the original tends to use the present or stative tense. Since the nearby sentences went with past, I followed that trend.

Actually, it's fine as it was. The incredulous part was the action of trying to hide herself by pulling in her arms and legs. The idea is that it is incredulous that she even tried to hide herself in that situation. I believe that the original translation or option one is the best choice. -Kelnos

It was a light pink envelope. Is that kind of paper what they called [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washi washi]? There were lots of silvery cherry blossom patterns all over the semi-transparent paper.
The second sentence I cannot infer the meaning of. Should it be It is that kind of paper that they called/call..
or should it be Is it that kind... or is it something else entirely. -Kelnos

I would think that if it was describing the whole action that it would be placed at the beginning of the sentence. I guess it's fine if you think those are better but since 驚異的に comes right before 小さく丸め，wouldn't incredibly be modifying the adjective? I would think that if it was describing the whole action that it would be placed at the beginning of the sentence. If anyone knows for sure, I'd appreciate being informed because I'm trying to learn the nuances of translating. Thanks and if I'm being nitpicky, sorry.

Due to Ryuji's obsession with keeping things tidy and Taiga living alone in an apartment block just opposite of Ryuji's house, besides sleeping, Taiga ends up spending most of the day in Ryuji's place. Over time, Ryuji sees a side of Taiga that people normally don't see, and their relationship has become close to the point that rumours begin to spread on whether they're going out as a couple.

Afterwards, the series gained wide attention through merchandises like the drama CD, and on June 8, 2004 the story was republished as the commerical edition by [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koudansha Koudansha] (講談社). On the same day, 5,000 copies of the limited collection edition were sold for a high price of 9,800 yen, but were sold out merely two hours after pre-order started -- this immediately hit the headlines. In the end, the normal and collection editions combined had sold about 500,000 copies. The commercial edition was about the same in content as the doujinshi edition, but with slight differences in punctuation or word usage due to more detailed revision and editing.

The protagonist Shiki Ryougi (両儀式) possesses the same power as Tsukihime (月姫)'s Shiki Tohno (遠野志貴). Touko Aozaki (蒼崎橙子), one side character in Kara no Kyoukai, is the sister of Tsukihime's Aoko Aozaki (蒼崎青子). So the two stories are regarded as having the same world view.

The series is nicknamed "Rakkyo." It is a common debate whether the series should be regarded a light novel or not.

Just as a piece of trivia the title "Kara no Kyoukai" roughly translates into "the boundary of emptiness/nothingness".

According to her younger sister Aoko, she "looks like an educated mom with spectales and a cigarette." Flat-chested in Kokutou's personal opinion.

:* The elder sister of Aoko Aozaki (蒼崎青子) the Mahou-tsukai in Tsukihime. She killed her grandfather and teacher, because he gave the title of Aozaki Family Head to her younger sister instead of her. The sisters' relationship is rather disastrous (in fact, her Tsukaima (使い魔, lit. magical servant) was destroyed by her younger sister). Compared to her sister, who knows nothing but destruction, her level as a Majitsushi is top class. The Majutsu Association (魔術協会) recognized her formidable power by dubbing her with the color "Tou" (橙, orange) which is close to the three primary colors. However, her most desired color, "Blue," has been claimed by her sister, and she was often mocked due to this. Whoever called her "Scarred Red" was exterminated (without exception, as claimed in the main story of "Kara no Kyoukai"--) Her skills are so formidable that the Association has declared for her abilities (as a top ranked puppet-maker) to be sealed under the Seal Order(封印指定), so now she is hiding herself from the Association. Her hobby is to get money from the Association in her younger sister's name to go shopping.

:* She also makes an appearance at Kinoko Nasu's "Mahou-tsukai no Yoru" (魔法使いの夜, Mahou-tsukai's Night). Also, in TYPE-MOON's legendary game "Fate/stay night," although she is not named, there is a bit in the story about a puppet-maker who receives the Seal Order. In the "Melty Blood" series Aoko complains about someone using her name to get money.
