What? Who? When did you translate this and why haven't I noticed it from the beginning? This is an excellent series and you translated an entire volume a month...that's ungodly. I just wanted to write here to say how awesome it's been reading this series (just finished the first book--I hated the way the author had me with the 'owner' mystery because of his cheap shot) and that I seriously congratulate you on your translations. Sure, they aren't perfect, but you clearly tell this wonderful story, and I'm definitely glad I read it. I truly hope you continue translating ^^.

For Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria, why edit "fufu" to "hehe"? The former is more of a sinister/evil strange laugh, and it doesn't translate to "hehe". For this series, that kind of laugh is fitting of the characters. I hope you didn't change all the fufu to hehe in your translations! In anime/manga/games/LN/etc, "fufu/fu fu fu" is normally associated with maniacal characters or evil to smugged, cold, sadistic, just plain amused characters who are devising a plan, etc. It'd be betraying their archetype design if we had them say hehe or something else entirely. I'll go through each chapter to see if there are any more changes and will revert them back to fufu... If that's fine with you. Hmmm, as far as i know it´s more accurate to say that is a "meaningful laugh", where it´s abit on the mocking side, is a bit hard to describe but it doesn´t truly have to be done by an evil character; afterall, since it´s "meaningul", it generally points at something, or indicates something that the character finds amusing, in fact is rather hard to use it in any other form without it feeling out of place.(Well in fact i can think of one instance in Hakomari that´s a good example of it´s general use but...well i´m already quite long-winded as it is...)

why don't you also translate the japanese inscription in vol.3 illustration?in other vol.(2 and 4 especially)they were meaningful and interesting insight into the charactr's thought that weren't in the novel.

I've been reading light novels here for a while...since vol 4 of Haruhi was halfway done. Some I like, some I don't. It's a matter of taste, like anything else. I've read both the Utsuru no Hako series and Gekkou and they're both at the top of a short list of favorites. Of the two, I think I prefer vol 1 of Hako slightly just because it scratches my science fiction itch along with my psychological horror itch. Great stuff. My Japanese isn't good enough to translate, but I'm happy to edit these (as I did with all of Gekkou) because they're so different/interesting and not at all like the generic LN offering here. :Dantalian no Shoka is a great LN, but it lacks a main story that connects everything, which bothers me a little. And don't worry about being too intrusive: if it sound better/more correct/more natural, then it's a good edit, and it will help me pick up new words, figures of speech and whatnot, since I try to check every edit. I really mean it. I sure took my time to come here and express my gratitude. Anyway, i must say it. All the works you translated had some significance for me. All of them. Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria made me like reading in the first place, it was something like two years ago (that's why I've said that I took too long of a time to came here and express my gratitude). The original purpose of editors was to help those whose command of the English language was weaker than the language than they were translating from. Zero, it is deffinitely true, that BT is group effort not a one man show, the problem is, that it doesen´t apply to one project, on which almost all the work does one person. And to boost it if the one person is at the same time supervisor and the only translator (and good one at that) he deffinitely has the right to say what to do and what not.
I think that speaking about possesivness is completely irrelevant, since he deffinitely possesses all the rights to this translation (except of the one of the original author).
The editors are there to help the translator with misspellings and if the translator isn´t good in english than correct their other mistakes, not to change style of text and similar things (deffinitely not if the translator doesen´t wish so). And one last thing. If editor leaves, there are always many others to replace him. Even if they weren´t, in the case the translator is at least avaragely good in english, it won´t change the quality of his work so much. Sadly, that is mostly my fault. I wanted to keep this under wraps. LiTTleDRAgo: I'm not sure. It started with Lllllllllllllllll here removing my name from the editor's list '''without any kind of permission''' and then when I put it back. Hayashi_s just suddenly up and tried to block out all the editors while using abusive language and when I told him what he was doing was wrong he just up and disappeared taking all his work. Deletion of the project was the last resort. I didn't want to do it, but unfortunately it was the only solution that would leave everyone moderately happy.

After I formally took over the supervisor role for UMD, the first thing I did was to re-evaluate the list of active staff on the project. After sorting out the translators into their respective categories, I moved on to the editors. Editors are a tricky subject. According to the BT guidelines, "Editors are people who proofread the translated text and correct spelling and grammar errors. Editors are also generally native speakers of the target language and are expected to be knowledgeable of said spelling and grammar." The problem now was that I didn't need someone like that. As a native speaker, my command of the English language was (and still is) sufficient such that I could translate fluently from Japanese to English without significant error. Therefore, it was obvious to me I wouldn't need an editor in the BT sense.

What I did need was someone who was also fluent in Japanese, to point out any mistranslations that might have inadvertently occurred. But then BT was already facing a shortage of translators. It wouldn't be right to deprive BT of a potential translator just to satisfy my high standards. Hence, the post regarding editors.

Consulting all the past edits on UMD, I found there were no significant contributions from any of the editors that corrected any glaring errors on the wiki. So, I purged the editor section. However, after doing so, it was brought to my attention that doing so without warning was high-handed and unfair, since there were other translators on the project and editors did edit their work.

Therefore, I had 2 options:
1.) Delete all other translator's work, so that I'd be the sole contributor and therefore be able to remove the editor list.

Obviously, this was stupid. The aim of BT is to encourage anyone and everyone to contribute; deleting stuff would be disrespecting the effort put in by the other translators.

2.) Remove my work, and step down from the project.

My problem lay with the fact I didn't want an editor, while the editor didn't want to leave. So in order to avoid a messy debacle over something so trivial as a simple list and who's on it, I decided that he could keep his editing role, but since having an editor went against my wishes I would have to step down. Plus, I realised the two other editors had made significant contributions in areas not related to actual editing, but valuable nonetheless and removing them like that would be unfair to them as well. Hence, stepping down was the only choice left.

This way, I could retain control over my work without needless interference and the editor would still remain on that list. The only people left worse off are the people who follow UMD. To you, I say this: Just because UMD might never appear on BT again doesn't mean it'll be lost forever. BT is not the only place to find LNs, it is merely the biggest. Someday the deliciously tsundere Charlotte and the lethally yandere Yaya may yet appear in some corner of the internet. Thank you for all your support while I was active on UMD.

Actually, If you don't want people to edit your work, you could ask for it to be protected. As for the past contributions of editors, I think you could list them as inactive, I believe that should shove the problem, they still have credit for the past contributions but they wil not edit your work anymore. I honestly have no idea why anyone is "mad" at Zero. I think the dude is a bit of an annoyance myself, but people like hayashi shouldn't even come here in the first place. He's a textbook elitist and he has no justifiable reason to take down his translation in this case. It was done out of pure spite and that's pretty silly. Translators like this generally slow growth of the community and can't admit when they're wrong, which is bad for everyone. Don't give me the nine yards on how the translation belongs to you, because it doesn't until you get a license from the creator.
