1. Are you working on the light novels or the web novels? What's the difference?

I'm working from the Chinese translations of the light novels. The web novels were published before the light novels, but the light novels contain more content in terms of character development and extra scenes. In addition, some lines in the web novels were toned down in the light novels. (And there's more fanservice in the light novels.)

2. Hey, dude, the chapters are out of order! Why did you translate Chapter Y before Chapter X?

Simply put, because someone signed up to do Chapter X before I did. Translators work at different speeds, so some chapters may come out ahead of the others. Everyone works at their own pace, so give them some time.

3. So when's your next chapter coming out?

If I got a dollar every time someone asked me this, I would be able to do this for a living. Click on the User Page tab on the top left corner and you will find my progression on the latest chapter as well as a rough estimate on when the chapter will be complete. And, no, it has been scientifically proven that asking me to work faster/harder does not improve translation speed. I am working off of PST in California, so do take that into account when looking for the new chapter on my update days.

4. Are you going to translate all the volumes?
Until otherwise stated, yes. Since I'm waiting for the Chinese translations on Volume 9, I will be going back for the side stories in Volume 5 in the mean time.

Is Volume 8 supposed to have such short chapters, or were they simply summarized translations of the full chapters?
Dreyakis, it's cool that you managed to shave a day off the ETA, The power of all the positive comments in the Expressing Gratitude section! Thanks for the huge effort you put into translating Mahouka - Aircool (talk)

Hey Drey! Out of curiosity, how far ahead of Mahouka have you read without translating? Do you translate a chapter immediately after you read it? I'm curious to hear if particularly interesting chapters are more fun for you to translate. On a related note, are there any overarching themes or references in Mahouka that are lost in translation (seeing as the current translation is japanese -> chinese -> english)? d4mi3n (talk) 23:30, 20 February 2013 (CST)

:In terms of "going ahead", the Chinese translators have already translated practically everything out in print, which means they have already finished Volume 8 and are starting to work on the Double 7 Arc. I translate according to chronological order, so in terms of sheer knowledge of the material, of course I know what is coming up way ahead of time. And yes, certain chapters are more to work on because I know what is yet to come. (*cough* Volume 7 Chapter 12 *cough*) Finally, generally there are no overarching themes or references lost in translation as the text does a good job making multiple references. What is lost in translation is that some of the terminology have a "genius bonus" when it comes to recognizing the kanji. However, it's no loss if the reader cannot read the kanji.

Question, if you dont know chinese or japanese what exactly can you do to help out with this series?Medisuena (talk) Thursday, 21 February 21:39:(+1)
:The project is always looking for additional editors to go over the translated chapters. If you are confident with the English language, feel free to read over previous chapters and check for errors in grammar, spelling, etc.

Questions and Answers

2. When are you going to translate the Afterwords or The Late Great Favorite?

Uh, probably some far distant time in the future. (read: never) The Afterwords and the Late Great Favorite bear no impact on the story itself. They are merely the author's thoughts as each novel comes to a close. Hence why their priority is very, very low.

5. Are you going to translate all the volumes?

Until otherwise stated, yes. Volume 5 may get delayed though, since it is a collection of side stories rather than advancing the main plot. We'll see what happens after the Nine Schools Competition.

6. I got the chapter summaries from somewhere else, may I post them in the forums?

Please don't. Last I heard, the chapter summaries flying everywhere absolutely killed all motivation for the translators. So...... Please don't. Please.

7. I want to join the project, where do I sign up?

I don't have the power to actually grant that, since I am not the project leader for MKnR, larenthian is. If you are interested in joining the project, drop by the Feedback Thread to let larenthian and Seitsuki know. Following that, inscribe your name onto the Registration page next to which chapter you would like to work on. I will not provide RAWs, so do not ask.

8. So what happened to your ETA or projected deadline?

While I do receive comments regarding the accuracy of my estimated deadlines, after spending some time reflecting and looking at the overall project, I have elected to restore the function on my User Page. Ultimately, I feel that the unfortunate actions of the minority should not reflect on the benign actions of the majority. Please excuse my temporary fit of pique.
I just want to let you know, Dreyakis, I highly enjoy your translation. I've spent quite a bit of time as an editor for various fan translation groups (never for light novels though) and even those projects could cause a man's brain to explode. Translation is hard work and you are doing the best job I have seen on Baka-Tsuki. It is a pleasure to read your translated text, doubly so because the novels themselves are excellent. The novels have an addictive neutrality to them, and I am very happy that you are translating them for an entirely new section of the world to enjoy. ~BakaGrappler
Welcome, pull up a chair, here be dragons. Check in at the Feedback Thread on the MKnR main page and let Larenthian and Seitsuki know that you're in. I just started a few months ago, so I don't have much in terms of seniority. Make sure to register for the chapters you plan to work on as well. First time commenting on bakaupdates, so not sure if this is the correct way, but THANK YOU SO MUCH for your work! I absolutely love this series. I've reread it 5x now eagerly waiting for my next hit of ecstasy! I actually created a log in just to voice my utmost gratitude to you and all the hard workers that work on the Mahouka series! I truly hope this series becomes an anime, but at the same time I know it'll never be as glorious as the LN! You work so quickly and your translations are top notch! I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say thank you, and we look forward to future releases! -Vudoodude
My favorite thing about your translations is your keeping us informed of where you are and when we can expect the next chapter. It gives purpose to my checking three times a day to see if a new chapter is out. Love your work - Dracohall
Hello I am new to Baka-Tsuki and I have a couple questions that you can help me with. (Sorry if this is in the wrong place to put it, but I am new and I don't know anywhere else to put it.)
-
I want to help with translating novels on this wiki, but at the registration page of a project it just shows the chapters and the translators who translated it and I can't find anything that could help me. And if I do register to translate a chapter where can I find or get a raw version of the chapter to translate or do they provide you with one. Currently now I am in my third year of Japanese at a highschool standard and I am wondering if this enough to actually start translating chapters. I can understand Japanese sentence structure/grammar, hiragana, katakana like only 20 kanjis. Thank you in advance for answering. :) - TheWierdSaying
Larenthian is the project leader for Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, so I don't have the final say on who does what. (Larenthian is on vacation until next year, but may poke in from time to time.) If you are interested in joining the project, go ahead and check in on the Feedback thread that is linked on the main Mahouka page. The Registration link is only to let the translators know who is doing what. Unfortunately, you will have to hunt down a copy of the RAWs yourself, as we don't have a handy supply cache anywhere (not that I know of). Dreyakis, out of curiosity, how do you manage to crank through these translations so quickly? I'm curious how you get so much done so quickly; never mind the quality which I have absolutely no complaints about. I've also been very impressed with how well you estimate time until completion, which is a skill that's impressive in and of itself. - From where are you? i would like to know mainly because of the time difference. ~Forbdn.Domin8r

Generally speaking, my productivity is around 10 pages per day since I'm translating Chinese to English, with appropriate increases in output on my days off (Wednesdays and Saturdays). It's not hard to make an estimate after that. I'm out in California, so the time stamp on B-T is two hours ahead of local time. Um I don't know Spanish?.. if you're referring to the English TL tho, I've done the prologue of vol.9 and am currently *slooowly* going through chapter 1. If it wasn't for the text ver I'd be going even slower. As it is, this may take a while. The writing style is... unique. (and painful.) (emphasis on painful.)
He wasn't updating because he wasn't done, not because he thought people didn't care about updates. I think he just posted it because people kept bugging him. Also, I would like to point out that I'm pretty sure 95+% of people will forget his "bravery" and selflessness. That's just how it is on the interweb. I know I'll forget it, which is why I try to send him little rewards before I do. -- EnigmaticAxiom (talk) 26 November, 2012 15:00 (CST)
Hey do you know when you will be finished with chapter 8? Md_rat

Please update chapter 8!!

Don't harass the man about the translation. Not that it will even get to him in time. I believe Seitsuki has been away from a computer for a while. Also, regarding the American v British English, I don't think he should even need a note. Editors seem to take too much liberty with the writing and go beyond fixing spelling/grammatical errors. Mind you, one of the major differences between the two forms is spelling, it's still an issue on the editors' part, since many of them don't know the British spellings, and most of them don't notice that the same "spelling errors" are done in the same way again and again. This includes myself, which is why I try my best not to edit anything other than gross errors. --EnigmaticAxiom (talk)

Thanks for the update! and don't worry even if it's unedited that's where editors are for, as long as we can understand the whole thing then it's fine... and again thanks! the urge to spoil myself to read chapter 9 is really killing me :D<br />

3. Hey, dude, the chapters are out of order! Why did you translate Chapter 9 before Chapter 8?

Simply put, because someone signed up to do Chapter 8 before I did. Translators work at different speeds, so some chapters may come out ahead of the others. Everyone works at their own pace, so give them some time.

Please.

7. I have more questions that you haven't answered here!
Thanks in advance and again i really appreciate your work here :)
