some missing sentences in Live A Live

Post by an Engrish speaker »

This is the Japanese original text.
「できん」
「あっそう。でも練習次第でどうにでもなるわ。なんたって後一年も時間が
あるんだからね」
おいおい。

「来年の文化祭、あたしたちもバンドで参加しましょうよ。軽音楽部じゃなくてもオー
ディションに受かれば出れるみたいだし、あたしたちなら楽勝だわ。あたしがボーカル、
有希がギターで、みくるちゃんはタンバリンを持たせてステージの飾りになっ
てくれればいいわよね」
いやいや。
"I don't know any."

"Let's form a band for the school festival next year. Even if we don't join the Pop Music Society, we can still go on stage to perform after passing the audition. We'll get through with ease. I'll do the singing, Yuki's the guitarist, while Mikuru-chan can shake the tambourine and make the stage lively. Good idea, huh?"

No, it's not a good idea!
Above is the translation in Baka-Tsuki.

I think some translations from the Japanese sentences in red is missing. :(

Hmm.... something about practicing and having a whole year?

And Kyon's trademark "Oi oi" :)

the hard parts for me were "どうにでもなる" and "なんたって" -- I ended up googling for examples, since alc failed me. (a tip: try searching for the romaji of the word as well; you sometimes get lucky and get a nice English explanation of the term.)

For "どうにでもなる":

どうにでもなるCGの世界

For "なんたって":

"Nantatte sutorippu!" (Striptease in the End), Herumesu (Hermes) 18:141-142.

Code: Select all

[With a cheery smile, Akane visualizes Madoka-chan.]
narration:
After all, I only have nantatte atashi wa madoka-chan
  eyes for Madoka-chan... after-all I (T)

                                  hitosuji na n da kara...
                                  intently is (explan) that's-why
I'm sure nantatte must be some kind of contraction, but the meaning seems clear enough even without knowing the etymology. For "dou ni demo naru" it seems to be literally "become anything/any way" ... so basically an expression of confidence. So with that in mind, translation attempt goes like this, with things fairly literal:
"Really. But dependent on practice, anything can be done! After all, we have a year's time!"
Anyway, that's my not-so-confident interpretation, for what it's worth.

Oh, here's something else:
なんたって 【何たって】
(連語)
〔補説〕 「何と言ったって」の転。話し言葉で用いる
何と言っても。なんてったって。
・ ―若さにはかなわない
So it's short for "何と言ったって"; the example sentence seems to be unrelated -- "Youth cannot be beaten"? Anyway, alc corrobrates the "after all" sense when searching for "何と言ったって"
Baka-Tsuki, suki! Yuki, suki!
