Need help translating a specific line

Post by HolyCow »

Alright, I'll admit that I've never been to Japan, and so am not familiar with that place. Could anyone help me with this specific line here?

**町**丁目

The *s are asterisks alright, no problem with that. Now I'm not sure what the 町 in question means. According to the dictionary, it means "rice field" or something close, but is that what it really means? Or is there some other place with a similar sounding name?

丁目 (chome?) I'm guessing this means street? Why they chose to use such a word is beyond my comprehension.

Are my guesses correct? Or are the *s meant to censor out some sensitive place? O.o

The entire line is:

明後日、土曜日。南に向かい、夕方までに**町**丁目にある歩道橋に行ってください。

The * are definately details that are crossed out, but in this case I thnk the 町 means street or road... so I think the part in question would be translated as "** street, ** district"

Edit:
Between Google translation and a dictionary (and some creativity), I come up with:

"The day after tomorrow, Saturday evening, please go to the footbridge on ** street in the ** district and face south."

I guess "District" makes more sense than "Rice Field" lol. Thanks Smidge!

I just noticed (by rewatching Chobits lol), could this mean "Town"? I saw Chi reading a book that had "町" as "machi", if I'm not mistaken.

I checked a dictionary, and here's the result:

町 (machi) - (n) (1) town, (2) street, road, (P)
丁目 (choume) - (n) district of a town, city block (of irregular size)

So should it be "Street, Dsitrict" or "Town, District"?

I'm for street since it makes more sense lol

I'd say street as well, since it's a more exact location. Either Town or District works, unless there is more information later on that would help clarify. (e.g. if they take a train or a taxi, I'd be more inclined to say it's a different town)

I'll stick to "Street, District" for the moment since there's no inclination that it's in another city. If it pops up in a later chapter then I'll just hop back and change it.
