island syndrome mole

If you think back to the Island Syndrom (Part 2) episode at the end - where Kyon is talking to Koizume on the ferry back he focuses on a mole behind Kyon's ear

I had heard that it was explained in the novel but after reading the Island Syndrom chapter in "The Boredom of Suzumiya Haruhi" (Volume 3) no explanation is given...

is it explained later perhaps?
or maybe in the manga?

please help me
its been bugging me ever since i saw that ep
