I liked it a lot. I wouldn't mind if it ended at this volume. The relationship between Kyon and Haruhi was just as i liked it. ^_^

I think the anime presents it all more entertainingly, so compared to the show the book is ok.

A part of me died. ;_; Tragic stories tend to do that to me, and I found there to be a notable element of tragedy in this one. (see spoiler below)
Spoiler! :
I find that the Asahina-Kyon relationship is pretty tragic in the first novel. I mean, geez, if Kyon gets close too to Asahina--or if Haruhi somehow becomes too jealous/upset--then the world gets destroyed? This seems to be implied, and I have to say that really sucks! Kyon and Asahina seem to like each other, so they both get screwed--it's either that or the entire world gets screwed.

Another interpretation is that the world doesn't become destroyed, but Kyon and Haruhi simply become transported to a different world of Haruhi's creation. This seems implied by the fact that Koizumi and Nagato were still communicating with Kyon while they were in the Sealed Reality near the end of the novel. This is still a pretty sucky situation. Kyon's world may not be destroyed, but he still never gets to see anyone from that world again. I empathize with him so much.

If Haruhi weren't so likable, I'd dislike her so much. As it is, I'm left with a bout of cognitive dissonance.
I wonder how these tragic elements will play out in future volumes. I hope I get to read them. I really loved the first novel, even though it makes my heart ache a bit.
