Summary:
Spoiler! :
Any publishing industry would know that no story manuscript is accepted as it is submitted. It needs countless editing and revisions before it can finally be of presentable, publishable quality, and that's what literary editors are for. However, there has been rumors of a small-scale printing press which, contrary to the convention, skips the entire editing process and is yet still able to churn out high quality light novels. Seemingly composed of only four members, one of them possesses the powers to converse with characters in any and every story he reads.

The story follows Hotaka Masamune, a hikkikomori shut-in who was once played by a girl and almost committed suicide from the psychological trauma, but is now the ace of WindFall Productions, a light novel publishing company known for taking on quirky and unconventional titles.

The Zel is the soul of a story. In this world, story characters have a life of their own, and in the same way that we are not all born into the family that we'd like (completely out of our control), story characters also aren't all born into the story they'd prefer. A romance protagonist may want to star in a horror-slasher title, or vice versa. This is in large part responsible for what makes a story bad and uninteresting.

As the sole person able to interact with Zel, Hotaka listens to the whims of various Zel characters during the REM (dreaming) stage of his sleep, and as best as he could, tries to grant their deepest and truest desires - the things they were never able to do in their stories. An appeased Zel will, for some reason, always result in the original story having an overall stronger audience impact. One could say it's a surefire way to improve a story without so much as changing a paragraph, not in the physical sense but more on the metaphysical.
