If you would call it a rapier people would thing it is a metal one with a sharp end while in reality though it has a shape of a rapier it isn't used as a physical weapon it is used as a magical one. So i am against calling it plainly rapier or sword, because they are not.
Spoiler! :
And yes, Wardes was supposed to marry Louise. It is just taht he never loved her, while Louise though had a crush on him as a child didn't loved him either. Seems like Wardes has more feelings to Fouqouet than he ever did to Louise.
Yeah I was asking to verify I had the right guy. Hmm, in the anime he had a normal rapier. I'm not sure what to call a wooden one. :? Does it still have the shape of a rapier? With the hilt-guard and all?

In it's description it is said that it is "rapier-shaped" and a few times handle was mentioned so I guess it has all your usual rapier/sword attributes (lenght, shape) just that material is not steel and the tip is not as sharp as sword or rapiers.

Here you can clearly how it looks

http://www.baka-tsuki.net/project/index ... 02-247.jpg

Though it looks like it is made from steel there was a few times mentioned wooden so I guess it is sort of special wood...

It is still not meant to wound at physical combat. The tip is not sharp enough while edges are not sharp too.

It can still block enemies swords (like Saitos) bit it cannot wound anyone by itself. You need magic for that.

I would guess (it is only my guess) is that sharp ended tools are not good to cast various magic as you would need much more facus and energy used to focus magic on the very tip and because the sharpened tip it might be less powerful.

I would guess if the tip is wider you dont need to use that much strength to focus your energy, you can realease your magic faster and it can cover more with greater strength.

Besides, if a commoner would get such cane he would have no use from it, since as a physical weapon it is useless to kill someone.

So I would not call it as simple as sword as rapier.

It isn't staff since staff looks like this

And with wand I would call this:

But I guess it could be called wand too. I used cane, but I do not know really how it should be called.

Well seems like we'll have to make something up for it. We should use the words Stiletto, Espee, or Rapier, as well as Wood, Wooden, (type of wood) to describe it. Did they ever give a name for the wood used to make it?

Wooden Stiletto/Rapier sounds fine for now.

The kanji that is used is mainly translated as cane/staff and wand. Not rapier so leave that out. It is not rapier it is not a stiletto it is a wand/cane with a shape of rapier but shape of thing doesnt make a thing itself, thus I disagree of using words stiletto or rapier. They are CANES/WANDS and not rapiers of whatsoever.

So it is a definite no to call it anything like rapier or sword. It is the shape but nor the function nor the thing in itself. Lets say a bed that looks like a table (but is a bed essentially), you would still call it a bed because it is comfortable to sleep in and it has the basic functions of the bed even if it looks like a table.

What i am trying to say it is function that makes a thing and not a shape of it. Thus it is magical wands/canes not rapiers.

Dont use rapiers in a word. It would make a sentence look silly. The author didnt bother to remind us that it is a rapier-shaped wand/cane, no he always called it the same and only few times talked about the shape. In this particular case I think it is better to follow author and use words wand/cane, without any adds about rapier or stiletto..

I'm just suggesting it for the reader who has to envision what it looks like. It should have a brief description the first time the weapon makes an appearance at least. But this is just my personal opinion to help clarify things.

Author didnt find it particularly important. he only few times mentioned "rapier shaped" while in all other cases it was cane/wand, since that's what it is.

It is only shaped as rapiers but are still the same wands/canes I was using word cane because I found it more suited but it could be called wands too. Just not rapiers. They are not physical weapons they are magical, and their shape is only in case the caster is attacked so fast that he has to defend few attacks without the magic.

So I would go the way the author did - call them wands/canes. Calling them rapiers wouldn't make anything more clear, it would only bring more confusion.

Alright, all I wanted to know is if he explained that they were rapier shaped at least once. I obviously wouldn't want to call it "just" a rapier, I was just suggesting wooden rapier because that is the best way to explain how it looks. Now as for which to call it, wand or cane, that's a tough one to call.

I wasn't really paying attention about anime (it is not worth it), but could you tell me if the wand/cane that Wardes used was with a sharp tip or not?

I'm curious if JC Staff ignored the fact that it is generally assumed (once we are talking about fantasy) that sharp tipped tools are not good to cast spells.

ZnT may be different (but judging from the way it looks it is not) but sharp tipped tools (like real rapiers) require too much focus, consume more energy and also because of increased focus are easier to be interrupted, plus they take more time to cast due to the same reason.

Just curious.

And yes I do not know myself if it should be called wands or canes. But because they are different from your usual wnads I wanted some other word, and since staff is well.. staff I though I would use term cane...

I don't think it was pointed in the anime. All I remember was it looked metal and he did sword fight with it.

Well, it cannot be metal as such, because again, from our general knowledge of fantasy and magic, the elemental spells (and ZnT world is basically based on 4 elements, and there are only few void mages) require a living source to accumulate within, and metal isn't natural while wood is, thats why wands, staff or canes are used in magic instead of swords.

Rings are used as well, but only those that have rubies, diamonds or something like that, because they are also in general natural things, and thats where the magic can accumulate within. Metal, steel are not natural, thus they cannot be used for nature elements. Though it is said that for necromancy it doesn't really matter and it could be made of steel, but in ZnT there is no real necromancy and only Void mages can control life and death, but as we see Cromwell or Louise still use wands instead of metal objects.
