Study = No fail
No study = Fail

No study + study = Fail + no fail
(No+1) study + study = fail + (no+1) fail
*cancel out the (no+1) on both sides*

Therefore, study = fail

If
1) Study = No fail
2) No study = Fail

Dividing (1) by (2)
study/(no study) = (no fail)/fail

Simplify -> 1/(no) = no
Solving leads to -> no =1 or -1

If no = -1
1+no = 0
Division by 0 is illegal.

However if no =1 (the multiplicative identity), then (1) and (2), both become: study=fail,
which is consistent with the final result...

Unfortunately that line of reasoning ignores the values of "study" and "fail". You have two equations and three unknowns, thus the system is unsolvable.

...Just sayin' :wink:

I said divide (1) by (2), doing so cancels the "study" and "fail" variables. Once you find the value of "no", you can solve the rest easily. :P

Dan; No, you can't. There are multiple values for "study" and "fail" that allow both equations to hold true. :P Specifically: 1, 0, -1

You have an incomplete and unsolvable system of equations and any deductions based on it are therefore void!
