And what is so wrong about that considering they are surrounded by China, Russia and the Korean peninsula?

The only credible threat is NK, and the JSDF isn't exactly helpless.

That's the worst reason ever for not having a military. Complacency. So far, cool heads have prevailed amongst the leaders and the age-old tensions are just hot air used to gain political sympathy but what if extremists take over the government of China or South Korea? Or if Russia decides it wants the rest of the Sakhalin chain back and gain Hokkaido in the bargain as well? Or for whatever thousand possible scenarios that could emerge in the future?

A military is for future deterrence. If the military has to fight then it has failed. No sane person will leave themselves defenceless and reliant on others for security. I detest the fact that people fight and need militaries but its a sad fact of life.

The JSDF is a major power in Asia sure. In fact I will say the only Asian force that can match the Chinese but it still depends heavily on US aid and the US nuclear umbrella.

If the Philippine Armed Forces get any funding from the Government, then they too could be a very tough fighting force as well.

Also I wasn't saying that they shouldn't have a military, but why should the JDSF get even more power if there is very little threat at the current moment?

China right now is doing an economic takeover; Russia cannot keep their country together in one piece and is too busy holding hands with Iran and the Arab nations; and North Korea is too busy threatening South Korea and staving off an uprising from the starving peasants, which is most of the population. As far as South Korea is concerned, although some of the rhetoric is there, if they want to keep North Korea from invading, they will keep their mouths shut and play nice, given that the United States is an ally to both South Korea and Japan.

Using complacency as an excuse to build up a military is just asking for a war. Generally, the rhetoric used by such politicians and leaders that hold that position are ultra-nationalistic nutjobs looking to take over or destroy other nations.

The only reason would be to tighten the leash on North Korea and increase the strategic interests of Japan and the United States.
