There are a lot of Germans in mid-Missouri as well as well as a couple of Amish communities in northern Missouri. I am told not to visit there in the summer because they do not believe in air conditioning and deodorant.

Mostly. Quite a large number arrived at time of the Gold Rush, and Asians being Asians, largely kept to themselves for a long time. After all, they were surrounded by barbarians in a barbarian land (from their point of view).

Those were mostly Chinese though. Also, be careful with the whole isolationist thing. It tends to anger a lot of people rather quickly.

If anything, I'm poking at ourselves. We are the barbarians in their eyes, and to some extent they are justified. But only to some extent, since seeing the world in that way requires a certain degree of selective blindness.

One of the fun things about being abroad is that people expect you to be the crazy gringo, so there are things you can get away with that you would never dare at home. You are generally forgiven for all sorts of eccentric behavior, because after all, you're a foreigner, and everybody knows that foreigners are cracked. 8)

Quick way to find out: look at the Russian language topics under the Alternative Language Forum. It looks like there were several guys debating Zero no Tsukaima, for example.
