Riddles and puzzles.

Post by Dan »

Ok, I'll begin and when someone answers correctly, they can post one in turn. Ok, easy one to start:

Greater than God,
More evil than the devil.
The poor have it,
the rich need it.
What am I?

During the lunch hour at school, a group of five boys from Miss Jones home room visited a nearby lunch wagon. one of the five boys took a candy bar without paying for it. When the boys were questioned by the school principal, they made the following statements in respective order:
1. Rex: "Neither Earl nor I did it."

2. Jack: "It was Rex or Abe."

3. Abe: "Both Rex and Jack are lying."

4. Dan: "Abe's statement is not true; one of them is lying and the other is speaking the truth."

5. Earl: "What Dan said is wrong."

When Miss Jones was consulted, she said, "Three of these boys are always truthful, but everything that two of them say will be a lie."Assuming that Miss Jones is correct, can you determine who took the candy bar?
I know who the liars are, but I can't get the provided solution. How about you?

EDIT: I got it ^^

On another note, I found this quite awhile back.

It took me 7 turns to solve.
Bravo! Congratulations, you found the answer!

My answer to Umi's riddle
Spoiler! :
Abe and Dan are lying, Abe took the candy bar. May not be correct since I guessed this in 10 minutes and I'm too lazy to think about it ;P
Took me 4 turns :P
Bravo! Congratulations, you found the answer!

4: 5463 : the answer 3:-O O-:C

3: 7634 : 0 bulls and 3 cows
2: 5634 : 1 bull and 3 cows
1: 1234 : 0 bulls and 2 cows

HC got it right. Yay! Should probably choose something more difficult...

Here's a detailed solution to why: (my interpretation anyway)
Spoiler! :
We ignore Rex and Jack for the moment, as they are the only ones who can pinpoint a specific person and thus, are vital to solving the case.

Abe has to be lying because either Rex or Jack can lie, but they both can't lie since it would create a paradox. If we look at Dan and Earl, one of them has to be lying because they can't both be true at the same time.

With this in mind, we know now that both Rex and Jack are telling the truth (since we already know that the two liars are not them), which means Dan is lying and that we know that Dan is ALWAYS a liar. Duh~

We can write what Rex and Jack said as such:

R: ~R & ~E
J: R or A

("~" means not)

Since they both have to be telling the truth, then the only person left to consider is Abe.
HC: You were just lucky for the cows and bulls one...

Is it really that complicated? :?

Here's how I did it:
Spoiler! :
1. Rex: "Neither Earl nor I did it."
I assume Rex is speaking the truth, so 1 Truth. That means only Jack, Abe and Dan could have done it.

2. Jack: "It was Rex or Abe."
Since the thief was either Jack, Abe or Dan, and Jack says that it was Rex or Abe, he's speaking the truth. 2nd truth.

3. Abe: "Both Rex and Jack are lying."
Going by the above logic, both are speaking the truth, so Abe is lying. 1st lie.

4. Dan: "Abe's statement is not true; one of them is lying and the other is speaking the truth."
Again, going by the above logic, both Rex and Jack are speaking the truth, so Dan is lying (for more lolicon). 2nd lie.

5. Earl: "What Dan said is wrong."
Earl is telling the truth, since Dan is lying by above logic. 3rd truth.

The numbers tally (3 truths and 2 lies). Rex states that the culprit was neither him nor Earl, which leaves Jack, Abe and Dan left. Jack said that is was either Rex or Abe. The only person who matches both statements is Abe.

You have a 40lb block that you can break into up to 4 pieces of whatever size you choose.(i.e. you could get a 20lb, a 10lb, a 8 lb and a 2 lb. block because they add up to forty, but you couldn't get a 30lb a 20lb, a 10lb and a 2lb because you don't have enough stone available).

Assuming you have only a balance, could you, and if so, how many different ways could you break up the large block so that you could measure every integer pound weight from 1-40(1,2,3,4...)?
