Hougu

What exactly is a hougu? I've seen the term used in both Shana and Fate/Stay night, and it seems to mean some sort of powerful magical item.

Is hougu just a Japanese word for a powerful magical item? Just curious, so thank you.

Hougou in Shana I believe is the object some torches have, Shana's sword and the Renji Maigo are good examples.

I have no idea for Fate though.

Hmmm.......... Hou's kanji means Treasure and Gu can mean a number of things although in this case Tool would be the most fitting one. The word Hougu is often used in mythology to refer to a powerful tool, but they may not be magical. Btw, Noble Phantasm in F/S reads as Hougu.
