What society do you live in? (No sarcasm intended.) Just flip on the TV, and you will see that society often tells us to give into our base animal instincts. So, it does not matter if Lucy cheats on Steve, as long as she is in love. No one cares that Steve is wallowing in pain as long as we all feel better than Steve does at Steve's expense, and we are not Steve. Also, it does not matter that the divorce rate in the United States is over 50% with crime rates increasing by leaps and bounds annually. So, if this is the picture that you are painting by a "golden rule" of living out for as long as you can, I can definitely see that as the end result of a society without morals; one that thinks that morals are entirely relative; or that morals cannot be ascertained or defined and are all in a "grey" area.
