In question of your dilemma why not just follow that you are interested in another culture's language? As much as I love anime and manga Japan culture is often overlook due to this filter. I think anime and manga is a great beginning step in learning their culture, heck it was ninja turtle that got me interested in Bushido. But then again if you are a Chinese like my family is, they are discriminated against Japanese as they haven't apologize for the Rape of Nanking. At least Germans admitted they were nazi.

Ugly thing that happened in a city in China, during the time of WWII, when Japan occupied China. Basically, all the men got slaughtered and women got raped.

See that's the sad thing I find to be one part failure in the american education department. This event is equivalent to the Holocaust. Hell you could even say is the Holocaust of the East. I'm just glad that we had our own version of Oskar Schindler. Do me a favor and read this wiki link

Another problem is that in most Japanese schools, it's limited to 3-4 lines as a sidenote. So no doubt it's enough to make Chinese micro-blogs and the government scream out.

Alter is used for 'one and/or another'. Basically, it implies "two". However, alius can be simply 'an' another. So it can't be multiple 'others'.
