You should know that for your purchase to be worth something, it is necessary for a white knight or a daring lender to enter the bankruptcy negotiations and bring AA out of bankruptcy. By letting it go bankrupt, and then reform after the ashes would be the typical tactic since it can shed debt. That means debts such as retirement pensions would mostly die off because they would be used to pay the investment and banker firms first. If you remember, the republicans under Bush SENIOR changed the bankruptcy laws to allow private firms to leverage escrowed funds. Normally, the common person thinks of escrowed retirement plans as being untouchable, and under the old laws yes. But the republicans were unhappy about business prosperity and changed the laws to allow certain types of debt instruments to have priority over other debt instruments. VOILA. Your retirement payments and principal has lower priority than the debts held by certain investors and banking institutions or even other companies. After all, it is more important to give the money to the rich than to the people in general under trickle down (Ayn Rand) economics. After this was done, the "new" company would then reform as AA again but now with much less debt and be able to renegotiate lower salaries for people who want to come back to their former jobs. The debt shed is usually labor-based (retirement, existing salaries).
