Harem MC - Hating or liking them

Let's speak about the harem MC.

Most of them are dense, indifferent to the girls' feelings.
Others are badass, crushing their enemies, and making the girls having a crush on them.
And there are other personnalities, I forgot them.

So, what's your opinion about the harem MC?
Who are your favourite ones? And the most unlikeable?
Who is the densest one, and how would you rank them?

You forgot the "Female - Yuri harem" option. Although we always get the short end of the stick anyway (damn you, Aoishiro).

Apart from that, high density always gets in the way.


On a more serious note, the protag mustn't be too dense. Or if he only acts as dense as a rock (Campione, maybe), we should regularly get an indication that it's reallyjust acting and he realizes what's going on (definitely not Campione).

To me, it all comes down to if I can consider them a bro or not. This is purely a case by case basis. Touma, for instance, I do not consider a bro. Ichika, however, I do consider a bro. hmm.....I guess it more comes down to whether or not I like any girl that likes them.

It really depends on the character

Examples:

Trinity Seven: 7-Nin no Mahoutsukai has a guy who flirts back and is generally a pretty cool (and not useless) guy

Kirito from SAO is a badass though dense. But he's cool, because he's actually capable in combat, which is more than you can say for a lot of male leads >_>

Issei from Highschool DxD can't seem to say 3 sentences without making a reference to boobs or some other female body part. He's not cool.

The guy from To Love has done nothing, has no idea that every girl likes him, and is pretty useless at doing anything. Yet every female in his vicinity wants his babies. /le sigh

I don't mind these protagonists, but they are not my favourite. My tastes vary a lot, depending on the story, the other characters and other things.

Campione's Godou is an interesting case. I'm quite sure he's at least aware of the feelings the main girls have for him. Problem is, he denies his knowledge, and any feelings of his own. He denies them so much that the author usually doesn't tell us he is aware or that he denies them, so it seems like he's totally unaware (if it's not like this, he is very forgetful...). This means he might also be very aware of all the other girls crushing on him, and in order to not become like his grandfather, he ignores it. To as little effect as it may have.

(I wonder what would happen if Godou was aware of all the girls who like him and admitted it... all hell might break lose which is why he acts the way he does. I think)

I really don't have a problem with the harem genre.

It depends on whether the harem is formed because the guy is a badass who gets things done, or he's some useless guy who happens to make magical babies.

I'm fine with the former but the romance in the latter always feels forced, which never leads to a good story
