When playing cards two things comes in mind: Luck and Skill. The luck of the draw. Even with the worst hand you could be dealt with everything can be turned around by presentation, bluff, and swiping hands  .
True. But it all comes down to luck. Skill is nothing compared to the power of luck don't you agree? A novice could beat an expert if he were lucky enough...

He is not saying that we should or need to be in control of or responsible for everything around us. He is just saying that most of the time the situations people find themselves in are the consequence of their choices, and they have the power to be positive or negative about the situation to bring change or not.
He might say that, But it the end, it all comes down to willpower. If you simply wish for something, it wouldn't come true unless a lot of effort is placed... Some people are lucky enough not to place any effort. Those are the people I hate...

Here is more of the rest of the e-mail to help put things into greater perspective.
Most of the time, we place ourselves in situations via the choices we make in life.

While we cannot control everything that happens around us, we can control the situations we place ourselves into. It is our responsibility to put ourselves in the best places possible.

From a certain manga that is unexpectedly interesting:

Plot: Currently, the temporary teacher is being replaced by the arrogant new teacher(Looks down on the temporary teacher, commenting that he is nothing, and that if he is a teacher, then the job is nothing as well), and some students are complaining...
New Teacher: "Shut up. 'To silently abide by the school rules', if you cannot even follow such a basic rule, don't think that that works in society."

Temporary Teacher: "I wanted to just do a simple greeting, but forget that.

Towards you guys who will move into society, I only have one thing to say to you.

'Don't think that following rules will work in society!'

Rules were not made for you, but for 'the one who made it', and the 'reality' and 'future' it commands will often become your 'enemy', so if there is a 'future' you desire, fight for it, fight against 'reality' and pummel it to the ground, to hone your weapon, to live with the rules only you have, and to make reality accept these rules. Doing so will make the future truly yours."

Temporary Teacher(with a smirk): "Sorry, guess a teacher like me has nothing else to teach them, so I leave them to you now, the so-called 'Rules of Society', an easy deal right?"
God!!
You need not forgive me.
For those I love,
The violence brought about by sinful men
Shall now be used once more.
If you were created to save this world,
If there is a single shred of hope left for the future of mankind,
I am very sorry, but, please begone!

Basically think GTO with a hard-core otaku as the lead. It is surprisingly good so far. Teacher manga is hard in the market or at least hard in terms of either beating GTO's standard or at least not to be compared with it.

As much as I like that quote, like anything it can be twisted into a negative way. For example if I wanted to control people through manipulation I give people the illusion of free will.

Ok. I think that a similar quote was in GTO itself, but I could be wrong.

Why not just Google search?

From Sora no otoshimono(In a contest of "who is richer"):
Contestant A (Rich boy) : "My family's yearly income is around 10 billion!"

Contestant B (Mikako Satsukitane, our favorite student council president):

"My yearly income? My... I always have troubles not having enough(to spend?)... Please wait a moment... I will make a call to ask...

*makes a call*

Mr. President? How much can you spare this year?"

Judge/Commenter: "Er-hum... Allow me to explain. Regarding our country's finances, there are certain ambiguous expenditures, actually these are---

*Glare from Contestant B*

Sorry, I better not talk about it..."
Needless to say, we know who would win... Right?

To make up my quote-a for not posting here often enough, here are a couple of them.
What you have done is make complex simple, the simple beautiful, and the beautiful sublime.
Note: I am trying to find the exact quote and who said it. I am thinking that Albert Einstein wrote this in a letter, but I could be and probably am wrong.
Unhappiness is not inevitable.

Even when we are angry, judgmental and miserable, we have the best of intentions.

We have been systematically taught to use discomfort as a strategy to take care of ourselves.

We can un-teach ourselves...and begin again.

*

Unhappiness is not an enemy - just a choice.

This book is not based on a moral imperative: no shoulds or should nots, just choices.

*

When we choose happiness, we choose love and inner peace.

When we choose love and inner peace, we help others on the planet choose it as well...by our example.

* * *
We can live our dreams...instead of just dreaming them.

We can make a difference!

We ARE the difference.
