Most fantasies would bring out what reality is unable to, with exaggerations and all. Heck, if I am so into idols, i might as well go for real ones. So I actually look out for such unique characters, because it is quite impossible to see such events in reality. I mean, if you want reality, stop being an otaku and just go out there. If you want to see what unique and interesting ideas other people have, go virtual. So I tend to prefer the less "common" characters out there.
