Interesting. I would like to read Rei, but I do not know how I could get a hold of it. Likewise, I would love to play the games and the like, if they are not too bad in terms of content (i.e., if I could show it to a teenager without having a moral dilemma). I have enjoyed the anime up to this point and have even read a bit of the manga (Yoigoshi-hen). The problem with getting much of the content would be sitting down and translating it. I like translating, but I just think that it would zap much of the fun out of playing a game versus reading a book.

Yeah, I agree with Setherzam. Seeing this thread has been going for a while, it almost seems like a BT project. If only there were the translators, etc. to do such a thing...

It occurs to me that people miss out on so much stuff because the supplier is simply missing when the demand exists. I get the feeling that this is the case for the Higurashi games.

Think about it this way:
1. In this case, while there certainly is demand, there is not enough demand to spur distributors into action. While Higurashi has attained a certain cult-level sort of following, the cult in itself is pathetically small in comparison to other, similar cults such as say... Naruto or Bleach.
2. The distributors and commercial translators you are referring to have a limited task force and limited supplies to do what they do. Also remember that these guys are small. Very small in comparison to other bigger studios. So if they did anything, they better damn well get a huge reward in return.
3. It's also important to remember the content of the show you are talking about here. We're talking about pubescent girls mass murdering the inhabitants of an entire town with graphic, brutal, bloody violence with lots of references towards child rape and psychological torture of young children. Stuff like this doesn't get through censorship easily.
4. Please keep in mind the the grand majority of anime "fans" prefer simple-minded stuff like Dragonball to keep them occupied. Not things like this which are... somewhat more complex and harder to follow.
5. Finally, try to remember that just because it's popular on the internet does not mean it's popular in real life. There are plenty of people who don't voice their opinions online but exist in reality where "real" money transactions take place.

I understand what you are saying quite well. That is just the problem. Pretty much, it would take a group of people or a few really rich people to do something like this. For example, if you took a voluntary donation from people who wanted the product, they would receive it for "free" as a "Thank you" for their donation. The money would go towards the licensing and production. All of the work done would be voluntary by enthusiasts. This would cut costs and make it viable for the fans to develop a product for the market. All other sales would go to develop other games and the like. If you do not want to be part of a project, quit and someone else will do it for you. The system would be a larger version of what subbers do now with a bit more of a marketing idea behind it.

As far as the content of Higurashi, I realize that many governments would not allow this kind of thing to be released without some kind of restrictions, if at all. My solution to that is for such a corporation to be successful, it would just have to be a bit picky on the material it releases by setting up rules and policies.

Concerning what people watch, I know the feeling. I have found that many people are too content watching crap because they do not want to engage in something that actually entertains and makes them think/grow as a person.

As for popularity, I am not judging by what the internet shows. I am simply saying that it would be an interesting idea for something like Higurashi to get developed in other countries. Frankly, I do not care so much that others are into something I like in terms of marketability. I would just like to see it marketed.

On another note, does anyone know where I can find the novels, light novels, and games? I would like to find the light novels especially because they are rare and hard to find. They also have special side stories. It would just be interesting to read/translate on the side.
