Recently another web novel, 魔法科高校の劣等生 (Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei), was published by Dengeki. It seems to have pressed all the right buttons on the mainstream light novel readers and is currently sold out in almost every store in Japan.

I was initially interested in the comments on the book, but was surprised to find the whole story (that goes far beyond the currently published volume) as well its spin-off are still available for free online.

The page may be pulled any day, so it may be a good idea to back up the stuff there if you are interested in reading it later or want to know more about the story first before getting the book. From what I have heard, it is kind of a mixture between Shana and Oreimo, with a complex world view and a focus on the dynamics between a bro-con imouto and a Kyousuke-like aniki. It sounds very much like what Kuroneko would write using Kyousuke and Kirino (dere ver) as protagonists.

I still have other stuff in my to-read queue so I am putting this on hold for now. But I have already backed up everything in the web novel page.

Do you have the numbers of the sale, compared to another LN similar to this?

Not even one week has passed since the release date so it is hard to get the figures.

But I wouldn't expect it to be anywhere close to Haruhi. In particular, the first week sales will be moderate at best (unless the second-print copies are released in less than a week).

The current shortage is largely caused by the publisher's prudent choice for the first print amount, given that this is the author's debut work and no one wants to risk stacking up the inventory. Regardless, the novel was cleared out of the major book stores on the first day, and disappear from the minor ones in the following days. The amount of copies in the second-print will be decisive for examining its success.

If it is anywhere helpful, the web novel has over 30 million views.

I just finished reading Kurozuka, and it's only now that I noticed that there is a Madhouse anime based on it! :D
Anyhow, it was quite an enjoyable read. After those first hundred pages, the story made a sudden turn and went into the future — after a meteorite had crashed into the Earth.

Next on the list is the second book of Haruhi 10. Let's see if I like that one better.

Is Kurozuka a single volumr, or a series?

It's one book with ~640 pages. I think it was serialized in some magazine from 1997 to 2000, though.
