Wait a tower of babel? Make a space elevator and call it that.

Nope. They are literally calling it the Tower of Babel. I find it odd how they do not see that as being potentially problematic...Regardless, it is not the elevator from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

More or less, yes. The Tower itself was not so much of a problem. The problem was the idolatry that the the people were committing themselves to as they built the Tower to commit open insurrection against Heaven. Some commentators note that the Tower was built only about a generation (~20 years or so) after the Flood, which occurred for many of the same reasons. Apparently, people do not learn...Anyhow, if you would like, here is a link to Genesis 11:1-9 that gives the account.

I would not say that we are all "screwed," but I would say that I have to wonder categorically about the builders' mindsets on this project. I realize that they probably do not see this issue the way I see it, but some things are better left in books as markers for history and only brought to life through the studying of those books.
