Non-Anime Movies

Post by ainsoph9 »

This topic is dedicated to discussing non-anime movies. I am officially excluding TV shows, even ones related to movies as a way to narrow the focus here.

For example, I just finished a documentary called "Hijacking the Holy Land" on Netflix. My comments should appear hopefully within the next few days. In any case, the movie was about the conflict in the Middle East. Regardless of your opinion on the conflict, I suggest watching it, if only for food for thought and without a visceral reaction. I will not say that the movie does not have its leanings, but no documentary does not.

On a less controversial note, I saw "Bulletproof" last week. It is about a cop and his relationship with a criminal with a bounty on his head. It was alright. If you are looking for Adam Sandler's best stuff, this is not it, but, if you are looking for a light-hearted take on a serious situation, watch it by all means.

How experimental are you thinking? Going beyond "Tool" music video weirdness experimental or just trying new things in general?

You mean like A Serbian Film and The Human Centipede 1 and 2?

I don't endorse any of these three films, by the way. I had to go watch Yuru Yuri after just reading the plot synopsis.

^ Well my taste resides in non-narrative story-telling. The type of movies you listed while abstract in approach is still telling a story. Then again the video I posted is kind of a story but one that isn't focus on human interventions. To sum it word I like exp films that doesn't try to make the camera invisible or not present, is very part of the film in itself.

I think I heard about a movie like that...Cloverfield?

Well, the film medium is large, I'm sure there's a lot of movies like that if you know where to look.

Not really into shaky cam. Again is a film technique used to tell an already conventional story. Here's another exp. film that I enjoy

Stan Brakhage is the one who broke the some unwritten code that male beings cannot witness the birth of their child by being the 1st to film his daughter's birth. Essentially he is the progenitor and the reason why fathers are so obsessive in recording their kid's birth.

I watched "Bunraku" last night. Man, it was a good movie. Too bad that it has not really gotten much attention.

I do not think that it is. It had some fairly big names in it. Interestingly enough, Gackt was one of the main characters. He is not a half-bad actor, but he tends to be somewhat stilted in his acting.
