... You sure have a taste for sake, don’t you?"

聴診器を外しながら、年輩の医師は溜め息を漏らす。
The elder physician let out a sigh as he removed the stethoscope.
埃と甘ったるい異臭の入り混じった薄暗い書斎に、年輩の男たちの姿はあった。
Figures of elderly men could be seen in a gloomy study, which was filled with dust and a sour stench.

書斎と呼ぶにはとても広い部屋の一角には高級そうなベッドがあり、
A high-class bed was located in the very corner of this very spacious study.

診察を受ける男と、それを診察する医師。
The man undergoing a medical examination, the physician performing it.

そしてそれを見守る使用人のように見えた。
Even the employee watching over it seemed similar.

「酒は我が友だ。
お前に負けぬ友人であり、そしてお前よりも付き合いが長い。」
"Sake is my friend.
It is a friend that definitely won't lose to you, whom I had a relationship with before I even met you."

聴診器のために胸を肌蹴させていた男は、着衣の乱れを直しながら、悪びれる様子もなくそう言う。
So said the man with a stethoscope lying on his chest, as he tidied his clothes without any trace of shyness.

「…………金蔵さん。
…あんたの体が一見調子がいいのは薬が効いてるからだ。
"............ Kinzou-san.
At first glance, you appear to be healthy because the medicine seems to be effective.
だが、そんな強い酒を飲み続けては薬の意味もなくなってしまう。
However, if you continue consuming such strong sake, said medication will eventually lose its effect.
…悪いことは言わん。
... I'm saying that sake is bad for you.
酒は控えなさい。」
So please don't drink too much."

「忠告の気持ちだけはありがたくいただいておく。
"Thanks for your advice. I’ll consider it.
我が友よ。
My friend.

………源次。
........ Genji.

もう一杯頼む。
One more cup, please.

心持ち薄めでな。
To appease my mood.

南條の顔も立ててやれ。」
You too Nanjou, raise your head."

「………よろしいのですか。」
"......... Is it alright?"


源次と呼ばれた老齢の執事は、酒を求める主と、それを止める主治医の双方を見比べた後、
The old butler, Genji, looked both the attending physician and his master who demanded the sake in the eye.
無言で小さく頷き、己の主の命令に忠実に従うのだった。
He nodded slightly without saying a word, as he faithfully followed his master's orders.
彼が酒棚で準備をするのを眺めながら、主治医の南條は再び深い溜め息を漏らす…。
Upon seeing the bottles of prepared sake on the racks, the attending physician Nanjou once again let out a deep sigh....

室内を満たしているその匂い。
That aroma filled the entire room.

…心も、そして魂も溶かしてしまうような、毒のある甘い匂いは、
... A sweet, poisonous aroma that melts the heart and soul,
主人の愛して止まないその毒々しい緑色の酒の匂いだったのだ。
It was the aroma of that venomous green sake that the master loved and couldn’t stop drinking.

「……南條。
"...... Nanjou.
お前は私の長きに渡る親友だ。
You are my close friend who I've known for a long time.

今日まで私を永らえさせてくれたことを、深く感謝する。」
I’m able to live such a long life up till today thanks to you. I’m deeply grateful."
「私は何も。
"I didn't do anything.
……医者としての忠告など、金蔵さんはまったく聞いてくれませんからな。」
...... Because even as your physician and advisor, Kinzou-san never listens to me. "
「はっはっはっは…。
"HaHaHaHa...
お前とて、指し間違えた手を待てと言っても聞かぬではないか。
Even if you pointed out that I was waiting for the wrong chess piece, I wouldn’t have listened, huh?
ならば相子というものだろう。」
So, I guess we could call it a draw."

「……お館様。」
"...... Master."

「すまぬ。
"I'm so sorry.
……薬は切れても死にはせんが、こいつが切れては死んでしまうでな。」
...... I wouldn’t die even without the medicine, but without this guy here I'd definitely end up dying."

諦めの表情を浮かべる南條を尻目に、金蔵は源次に差し出されたグラスを受け取る。
Looking at Nanjou with a resigned expression, Kinzou took the glass Genji was holding.

…いっぱいに満たされたその毒々しい色を見て酒だと連想できる者は少ないだろう。
...Looking at the venomous color in the cup, there's probably only a few people who could keep drinking it.
「………南條。
"......... Nanjou.
正直に話せ。
Tell me honestly.

私の命はあとどの程度持つ？」
How much time do I have left?"

「さぁて…。
"Well...

どのくらいと申し上げれば、そのお酒を控えてくれますやら。」
If I tell how much, maybe you'll hold back with the sake."

南條はもう一度、諦めの溜め息を漏らす。
Nanjou once more let out a sigh.

そして、結局はグラスを煽る金蔵を見ながら言う。
And then, while looking at Kinzou fanning the glass, he eventually said.

「………長くはありませんな。」
"......... You don't have much time left."

「…どの程度に長くないというのだ。」
"... I'm saying the amount is not much."

「……このチェスで例えましょう。
"...... Let's compare it with this game of chess here.

金蔵さんの詰めもなかなかですが、私のキングを追い詰めるには至りますまい。」
Kinzou-san's checkmate is considerable, but you wouldn't arrive in time to hunt down my King."

南條の目線の先には、サイドテーブルがありそこには重厚なチェスセットが置かれていた。
Before Nanjou's gaze, a heavy chess set was placed on the side table.
駒を見る限り、ゲームはだいぶ終盤に入っている。
Based on the chess pieces, the game was entering its final stages.

黒のルークやビショップが敵陣深く食い込んでいた。
The black rook and bishop had already taken down most of the enemy lines.

白のキングはすでにキャスリングして追い詰められており、素人目に見てもそう長い時間を掛けずに決着がつきそうに見える。
The white king had already been castled and cornered, and it was clear, even to untrained eyes, that the game's conclusion was set.
このチェスは、南條が診察に訪れる度に数手ずつを進め合ってきたものだ。
Nanjou moved the chess pieces each time he came to give a medical examination.
それを指して、決着に至るより金蔵が永眠する方が早いだろうと断言する。
He came to the asserted that Kinzou would probably enter his eternal sleep soon after the game’s conclusion.
…それは医者としてというより、長年の友人としての言葉だった。
...These words were more than a physician's, they were also the words of a close friend.


「…………普通の患者になら、
遺言を書くよう勧める頃です。」
"............ Normally, this would be the time to recommend the patient to write his will.

「……遺言とは何だ、南條。
私の屍をどのように食い散らせとハゲタカ共に指南する書置きなのか。」

もしも訪れる最期が今日だとしても、今だとしても！

私は何も恐れることなくその死の運命を受け容れようではないか！！
I fear nothing, I won't accept that fate to die!!
全てを築き上げた。
I built everything.

My fortune!

My prestige!
全てだ！！

それらは私とともに築き上げられ、私とともに失われよう。

そこまでを一気に捲くし立てると、金蔵は急にがっくりと肩を落とした。
When standing up to drink, Kinzou suddenly let his shoulders fall weakly.

…その表情は、まるで憑き物が落ちたように弱々しいものだった。
... That facial expression suddenly softened as if his obsession had faded.

「………………だが未練はある。
".................. There's something that I’m reluctant about though.

残すものは何一つないが、残したまま逝けぬものが、ひとつだけある…。」
There is absolutely nothing that I’ll leave behind after I die, but there's just one thing ..."

「………それを書き記せばいい。
".........You should write it down.
もちろん、生きている内にこなせればそれでいい。
Of course, it would be good if you could resolve it while you’re alive.
だが万一の時、残された者がそれを引き継いでくれる。
However, in the event that you couldn’t, the people left behind would be able to take over it.
自分に万一があっても、必ずその心残りが解決できるように残していく。

南條がやさしく肩を叩こうとすると、急に激昂した金蔵が南條のその手を払いのける。
When Nanjou tried to gently dust his shoulder, an enraged Kinzou suddenly removed Nanjou's hands.

「駄目だ駄目だ駄目だ！！
"No No No!!
私が生きている内でなくてはならぬ、私は死ねば魂はすぐに契約の悪魔に食らわれて消え去ってしまう！
It must be done while I'm alive. If I die, my soul will end up being devoured by the devil of the contract and disappear!

死後の世界も安らぎも私にはないのだ！
I won't be able to rest in peace!

だから全ては私が生きている内でなければならぬ！！
That's why everything has to be done while I'm alive!!
だから遺言状など私には必要ないッ！！
That's why I don't need a will and such!!
そのようなものを書く暇があったなら……、
あったならッ！！
If only I had time to write such things......,
If only I had!!
…私は見たい。
...I want to see.
もう一度見たい！
I want to see it one more time.

ベアトリーチェの微笑む顔がもう一度見たい！！

Made some alterations, and changed quite a few awkward sounding sentences. If no one has any qualms about it I'll upload it on the wiki tomorrow.
