Although WRISTCUT is the 2nd chapter in the novel, it is chronologically the 1st chapter, since it reveals how Boku met Morino. It's a pretty short chapter, consisting of only 33 pages, but is one of the best stories in GOTH imo :)

ETA: 2 weeks from now (16th May)

And so they meet... For the first time 8)

I have a vague theory on why Otsuichi put "Goth" before "Wristcut"... basically I think it's about revealing different aspects of the relationship between Boku and Morino; "Goth" setting up an expectation and "Wristcut" trashing that expectation to an extent. Haven't read all the way through, so it's just a vague thought based partly on the novel, partly on the manga, though...

I'm thinking more along the lines of this:

1- Otsuichi writes the 'GOTH' chapter as a stand-alone, one shot story.
2- GOTH is well received.
3- Otsuichi decides to turn GOTH into a short series.
4- GOTH decides to develope Boku and Morino in WRISTCUT

:D

You know, I hadn't thought of the one-shot angle. Sometime when I'm not feeling so lazy, I'll translate that Otsuichi interview I showed you before, since the first question is about "暗黒系 GOTH", e.g. the first chapter of GOTH.

Okay, first question he says how he came to write GOTH, which is that he started with the idea of finding someone's notebook. Originally he was thinking of making it a heartwarming story, as in finding the notebook of an elderly person, but later on he threw out that idea and made it the notebook of a criminal, and thus a dark story.

I kind of glanced through a few of the other questions, and they seem more about the novel in general; I'm thinking now it might be best to read this kind of thing after finishing the novel.

... Actually, there are some interesting tidbits about Otsuichi over at the Japanese wikipedia as well, like him having a dark and a light side, writing stories in both veins, under two different publishers, and that in more recent works, those sides have come together.

("きみにしか聞こえない CALLING YOU" being the only "light" writing that comes to mind for me.)

Wristcut up to 55%, and with that, Chapter 2 is done.

Now we move on to chapter 3, where the interesting bits officially begin... :)

I just underwent a minor operation yesterday, and although I'm still able to type and post, I don't think I'll be in the mood to do so in the next few days. That and my Internet has been frequently crashing lately, I don't think I'll be translating anything this week.

I doubt I'll be able to complete it before the 16th of May (my ETA), but I promise I'll finish it up as soon as possible. To everyone who's expecting GOTH (WRISTCUT in Particular), I sincerely apologize for the delay.

もしわけありません
