You only really need to know the 48 characters of the kana table to understand most of the grammar you'll need to know (there are of course exceptions, there are always exceptions ), learning them is a negligible effort in comparison to learning the amount of standard grammar you'll want (note, not need)to learn to properly understand the Japanese grammar the machine translations will happily mangle for you.
But then again, I would generally advise people who enjoy reading English translations of Japanese LNs that they probably should start looking at learning Japanese anyway, since I'm sadistic like that. (Where's a halo emoji when I need one?)
Personally I think learning grammar takes much more time than learning kanji. I've been studying Japanese since 2008 and still have plenty to learn before I can translating a chapter without consulting my sensei, while it took me only 2 and half a year to memorize 2400 kanji. Besides, learning kanji mainly help you read faster, not much about reading accurately like learning grammar. Japanese is a language where it's 80% about grammar. The first thing to do before translating a sentence is to understand it down to the nuance level, and you must understand the sentence's structure before you can achieve that. Relative clause is probably the most important grammar point because every Japanese speaker uses it very frequently, yet it is also the most difficult thing to grasp. Even now I still don't think I can do analysis correctly all the time without help (I asked my sensei about 200 questions while translating the last chapter, lolz). Still, when you are able to do that, you will find the reward really satisfactory.
Just whatever you do, don't pick my suicidal route of learning Chinese to read LNs. Kanji after Kanji after Kanji after Kanji.....I'll be exhausted by the time I start Japanese.

The status of volume 4 chapter 1 is "pending for edit". Does this status mean that the translator is waiting for particular edits (ie TLC) before allowing other edits? I noticed that some edits by an anonymous editor were undone; and I wasn't sure if it was because of that, or because the edits changed too much in the text.
Well, the problem was that unlike registered editors, the anonymous editor always tended to be too liberal without getting the idea, thus destroying what the author intended to convey. He even merged and changed the order of many sentences to boot, and that's also what he did with Chancs' translation for chapter 2. I'm just waiting for capable editors to jump in, but they are probably busy with IRL stuff or other projects.
OK, well if it's only a question of the content of the edits, then I would try some edits. And assuming it wouldn't be a nuisance, my edits can just be undone if they're not appropriate.
If any problem arises during editing, please post questions in the discussion section like other editors do. That's way better than making changes where you are not completely sure about. I will gladly try my best to help.

Because there are expressions that are not really use in English. So sometimes, it's better to change them.
There are some clueless people as always, but at this stage, there's no need yet to lock the chapters, except maybe the first or second volume.

It is as you said. I have kept it as close to the actual texts (placing 'comma' when there is 'comma' in the raw) There is a big difference in the reading/ writing style. One can better understand it when reading zzhk's.
It's one of the reasons Wikipedia has such a harsh editing policy. What's nice about a wiki is that anyone can contribute. What's bad about a wiki is that people's contributions aren't always for the better. It's a delicate balance.
