Nitpick over instant versus period of time
"When did you notice?"
Her tone was so cold that it was as if she was talking to a rock on the side of the road.
I paused for a while to think about it.
"Hmm... for a while."
This should IMO be "Hmm... a while back", as she asked "when", which is an instant in time, not "how long".
