Ok, you know you love me, if not, start. lol

So I found a guy in China who loves light novels. He speaks perfectly in chinese and can read both forms perfectly. He's going to translate chapters 3-7 of volume 1, and it looks like he is ok with translating all the rest of the volumes. :)

When I asked him how soon he could have a chapter done, he replied "2-3 days, maybe?"

I love this guy, I absolutly love him. lol

Longest he said to translate will be a week. He wants it perfect he said.

Make sure he understands how to use the wiki and the standard format guidelines that we use. Other than that, good job on finding him Matt. 8)

Um, question, I know we've been doinng the whole

JAPANESE TEXT
ENGLISH TRANSLATION

format for awhile.

However, since this guy is completely fluent in chinese and is even making sure his translations are good quality and such. Do we need to do the same? He's working on Chapter 3 and I think he prefers to have JUST the translation, like how we post stuff on the Zero no Tsukaima project.

Aleph, is this ok?

-Matt :)

PS. Since this would be a fluent translation, that would probably mean it wouldn't have to go in the DISCUSSION area, but on the main page for ch. 3

well this project was started for educational purposes for Japanese -> English.

I can understand using the Chinese translation will not fit in to this situation, however i don't see why we can't just output the translation from the Chinese raws as "Previews" for Spice & Wolf.

A bit like machine translation, it should give AlephNull and others a general idea to what it should say, right?

I think that'll be the best way to do this, without violating the principles of this project.

:D

I just lost all the text I wrote. :(

To put what I tried to type simply....no.

PREVIEWS are for machine translations or for translations with many many errors. These new translations will have neither.

It's up to Aleph, but I do not support putting them as PREVIEWS.

well, these Chinese translations don't have to be on the same page do they?

I think we can make an exception for this project to have two different scripts, one for Japanese another for the Chinese source ones?

we'll call it.... er..."source comparison" ?

Instead of us guessing about this, let Aleph decided.

He can either just let the translations go up as I suggested, or we make this hard on the reader and cause confusion by having two different versions that will most likely turn out almost exactly the same. Right.

From what I've gathered, no.

Very slight differences, that's all.

If I were in your (Baka-Tsuki's) position, I'd say go for just one version. You guys should focus on getting a good translation out. I came to you guys because I figured Baka-Tsuki would be a place with lots of interested people and experienced translators. I was looking for a place to discuss the text and learn things from other people, and you guys could get a translation in return, so it seemed win-win both ways. Certainly you guys should decide on the format of the other chapters independent of whatever I may do right now for the Prologue and Chapter 1. In fact, I'd get him take over my translations if he wishes, if he is as you describe him, he's far more skilled in Chinese than I am in Japanese. I can't comment on the differences between the Chinese and Japanese versions, but I imagine you guys have dealt with this kind of thing from previous translation projects. If he does the first novel entirely by himself, the style may be more consistent.

Note though that the Prologue has many subtleties, you may wish to check with him if/how they're reflected in the Chinese version.

For my part, I don't mind someone else taking over. I'll still be working on the Japanese version, right now I've been discussing it with people in other forums as well, not just on the wiki here only. I don't know if anyone else (Shapeshifter) has attachment to this project though.

Nobody's trying to take over the project, we just want to read the wonderful storys. lol

He's not doing ch. 1-2, only chapter 3 and onward to book 6. I say this because technically, book 7 hasn't been translated into chinese yet.

-Matt :)

PS. Your right about the Prologue, the Chinese could have possible changed the subtleness of it.

Someone can delete my other post just above this one. Didn't notice until after the second that this forum has mod post acceptance on.

WOOT! A FORUM FOR SPICE AND WOLF! WOOT!

Question, shouldn't this forum be closer to Zero no Tsukaima's instead of being so far down. Cause I think, but I could be wrong, that this project has more views or interest than the other forums above it.
