snorting sound? きゆるきゆる

Post by RonnieCorny »

can anyone help me with how to translate this?

it's supposed to be sound snorted through the nose... because the next paragraph went "Sylphid made a sound with her nose. She was hungry."

thanks!

Take a look at this web site: http://www.lolikon.org/misc/soundfx.html

According to them, you're talking about a stomach rumbling.

hmmm... that makes a lot of sense, since the next paragraph did mention that Sylphid was very hungry... it's just strange that the first sentence mentioned her snorting her nose... but still, what would be a good translation for it? "growl, growl?" and at the same time mention that this sound comes from her stomach rumbling?

that's one big difference between reading and translating... in reading, i just "understood" (wrongly at that) the sound fx and read on... (btw, this is from the side story of ZnT)

thanks! I didn't realize there's a webpage with these sound fx... this will give me some "shortcuts" to translating... are there any other such "tools"?

Right now my toolchest consists of the following:

(0) All twelve of the Toradora! series books (paper)
(1) The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary (paper, invaluable)
(2) The Langenscheidt Pocket Dictionary, Japanese (paper, very useful)
(3) Japanese - A Comprehensive Grammar (paper, a gold mine, just got this a week ago)
(4) A Dictionary of Japanese Food (paper)
(5) Jazz Up Your Japanese with Onomatopoeia (paper... not really that useful)
(6) Beyond Polite Japanese (paper... not really that useful. Bought it after I embarassed a Japanese lady friend by asking her what "ketsu" was.)
(7) http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi- ... dic.cgi?1C - Incredibly useful, but still spotty.
(8) http://translate.google.com/#ja|en| - Quite useful, but even more spotty.
(9) http://kanji.sljfaq.org/draw.html - Was essential before Vaelis gave me the Spinoff 2 transcript, when I was trying to create my own transcript. Needed this if I couldn't find a Kanji in Kodansha's dictionary.
(10) http://www.docoja.com/kata/katatxtgA-1.html - Useful, but still very spotty.
(11) http://www.lolikon.org/misc/soundfx.html - Quite useful.
(12) Good old wiki. The various topics on Japanese grammar are pretty good.

That's all, excluding the various idiot guides for learning Japanese that I read in the beginning.
