Essential Tools to help you Edit Scripts from Japanese!

Post by onizuka-gto »

Just thought I like to share with people some very nice tips, that has helped me along while editing these fine scripts we have on Baka-Tsuki.

One of my essential tools is:

Rikai-chan

http://www.polarcloud.com/rikaichan/

The instant Japanese-English real-time dictionary for firefox.

Helped me in those tight situations when you need a quick look-up.

For more in depth research i go to this website:

http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/wwwjdic.html

a great research site for those trickier kanji's.

If anyone else have anymore tips don't hesitate to add on!

:)

Lol... hmm Monash University? Whoever knew my university in the backarse corner of the world (*cough* Australia) actually released anything useful.

Yeah... not the most useful post I know, but had to show my surprise when I saw monash.edu.au in there. And yes, I study at Monash :P

Moving on...

I recommend http://jisho.org/ for it's example sentences. It's really helped me a lot whenever I run into particle usages or grammar points I haven't learned before.

Time for the dreaded crypto-post! (OH NO!) I am looking for a way to do OCR for Japanese vertical text. If people want to see me restart the translation for Iriya no Sora so badly, this will probably be the final step to get me there. (Unless, of course, I decide just to not do it. No promises!)

Never mind. I found something really handy and awesome. Here it is, if you would like.

What, no....I'm not pressing you to restart it....I was just wondering if you would since either way I'll solo it if I have to. For the volumes I intend to cover of course.

Something I've been using to deal with Japanese:

http://www.hongfire.com/forum/showthrea ... tor-v0-4-9

It's basically an all-in-one translator tool that auto-translates anything you CTRL+C (aka your clipboard). There's an auto-breakdown JP->ENG dictionary, plus configurable windows for ATLAS, Google TL, Honyaku (the 3 I use most), plus more. Just as easy to use as Rikaichan and much better results imo.

I believe this is still the latest version as of this post.

postedit: also in ainsoph9's post, but link to TA from there is broken...

I'm finding https://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/ pretty good.
Its getting 80+% of the kanji on my test page.
And there are probably simple things to help improve that, but I haven't worked on that yet.

I found that building my Mac version was getting better results than windows.
That is probably because I am using brew and it is building from source the latest code.
