Need help with 割れた (IS)

I need help with translating a sentence that has the word 割れた in it from IS. I'll quote several sentence before and after the sentence to give the context. It's from vol 6 of IS page 188.

雪羅をシールドモードに変え、その射撃をどうにかさばく。
しかし、俺はそのまま壁に背中から激突した。
”がはっ！”
致命的は隙を生んでしまった俺を、サイレント。ゼフィルスは見逃さない。
”死ね。。。”
バカッと中央から割れたライフルが、最大出力で俺を狙う。
バチバチと放電状のエネルジーを溢れさせるそれが、俺に向かって放たれたー。

What I want to ask is what the 割れた in the bold sentence means. I know that 割れた could means cracked, split or broken, but somehow it doesn't flow well with the scene(the rifle is split from firing its maximum firepower?). It will be nice if I could get an English translation on the bold sentence as well

I do not know of anything else it could be.

Same opinion here. Maybe it is one of those cool laser rifles in Macross that can split open.
