As someone interested in this series and studying Japanese, I was wondering how I could access the original Japanese version (I heard the author put it up on a free-to-view website before publishing it?).

It was here http://wordgear.x0.com/novel/. But I think it's already down because of the published version (SAO, that is).
If you want to read the japanese version, just go to a "japanese version" provider site.

You want to read the web novel version or the published version? If it's the former then I don't know, as I don't want to read it, but if you just search around a bit I suppose it's not that hard to find.
