if Utai refers to haruyuki as 小鸦 would it be Crow-san? or Crow-chan? (chan is generally for people younger so i think it should be san, but i've currently left it as chan)

Afaik, she calls him Kuu-san (lit. くうさん), so it'll be about there. If it's something like 有田同学 then it's very likely Arita-san in the Jap version.

Out of curiousity, are you using Chinese fan translations or the published book by Tianwen Kadokawa?

chinese fan translations. i should probably get the books for a better translation, but it'll take like a month for delievery so i'll probably stick with the fan translations. also i'll take it that i should translate it as kuu-san then, though the chinese uses crow unlike the japanese which i assume is kuu of kuuro

You don't live in SG, I take it to mean then. Well, they're okay, but I've found poor translations in the fan translations for V11 before...I still recommend the books above all, but fan translations will do too.

I might take it to myself to do heavy editing in the future, but that's just a thought for now.

to be honest i'd rather you do the heavy editing since i'm not confident in my own translations not to mention the fan translation may be different from the offical translation so its probably best that you edit it.

It could be less about literally standing up vs lying down, and more about whether to face your opponent straightforwardly, or via sneak attacks.

well its chapter 6 roughly a quarter into the chapter. where Haruyuki fights Bush Utan the part after he uses the technique he learned from Kuroyukihime. I think it is skills for lying down as Utan mentions that if he used them in the grassy areas the audience wouldn't be able to see what was happening.

Okay, so the original dialogue from Utan goes like this:

「でも、ここで寝技使うとギャラリーの皆さんに大不評なんスよねえ。何せまったくみえないでヤンスからねー」

The phrase newaza - 寝技 is a reference to pinning techniques in wrestling or judo, but it also could be a metaphor for underhand dealings. My Japanese is still about N4 Level, but I can safely say it's somewhere like "But, it's hardly fair for the Gallery Members (ギャラリーの皆さん) if such pinning/sneaky techniques are used, 'cuz they can't see a darn thing!"

The casual speech reflects the casual Japanese, of course.

As for the onomatopoeia 「呜」, I'd leave it as 'Ooh', 'Hoo,' the likes. Infer from the context.

It's literal. Try ground fighting or grappling.

Bush Utan's saying that if he shifts the battle to a ground fighting one, the audience won't be able to see a thing.
And he implies that he doesn't want that.

And if that "呜" is the short one a couple of lines before this one, it's "Ugh."

On this note, what's with Utan's use of やんす and なんす?

It's a casual, polite manner of speech, I believe.

～でやんす apparently originated from around the edo period.
But there's nearly no one that actually uses it now, so just think of it as a funny manner of speech.
Fleshing out his public personality and all.

Was ～なんす actually used anywhere?
