Mahouka: TLC Thread

Post by larethian »

This is the translation check thread. Of course it's impossible for me (or any volunteers) to TLC everything. What you guys can do is to look out for dubious lines or successive lines that don't completely make sense or match and post them here. It'll be helpful to provide RAW page number if you are able to. Thanks.

More importance will be given to battles and technology explanations with respect to magic.

The list below is what I have already checked, I still need someone to double check again, just in case. I can somewhat parse the Japanese sentences, but my vocabulary is quite limited.

1) Volume 2 Chapter 10
2) Volume 5 - Chapter 4 - My RAW check based on the comment by 180.43.16.157
3) Volume 6 Chapter 6
4) I scanned through all comments in Volume 6
5) Since it is mentioned in Talk Page, I checked the RAW and found that some meaning is lost in translation for this sentence.

Current: Erika's answer to Mizuki's question suddenly thrust her into the middle of Tatsuya and company's conversation.
Original: いきなり会話を乱入してきたエリカは、そのまま達也たちを放置して美月の質問に答え、
Literal translation: Erika, who suddenly thrust into the conversation, leave Tatsuya and co. behind (in the conversation) as she answers Mizuki's question.

Other concerns from other people, not yet RAW-checked. I checked from the most recent post back to page 60 of the General thread and found one that doesn't seem to be addressed.

6) Volume 4 Chapter 9

From the Talk pages, also not yet checked against RAW:

7) Volume 4 Chapter 8

The text in question:
"Shiba-kun's strategy is very simple.

He used light wave oscillation magic to control the light along the water route.
8) Volume 3 Chapter 4

9) Volume 6 Chapter 5

Noted and thanks. I'll check them when I have time, which won't be soon, but keep them coming anyway.

I have a doubt about the translation in volume 8 chapter 2:
Spoiler! :
There is a part that says:
"When the conflicts finally ceased, the world’s population was a third of the size it had been in 2045; it had been decreased by 30 hundred million people."
I might be confused since english is not not my native language but is 30 hundred million a number?
I though that 3 hundred million would be 300.000.000 so wouldnt 30 hundred million people be 3.000.000.000 which is 3 billion?

Yeah, something sounds like it went strange in translation somewhere. From memory, Japanese counts in groups of 10000s, whereas SI units count up by the 1000s, so it probably should be 3 billion.

I cross-checked with Jap source: 三十億 is 3 billion () so I corrected the mistake.

一、十、百、千、万、十万、百万、千万、億、十億
1, 10, 100, 1 000, 10 000, 100 000, 1 000 000, 10 000 000, 100 000 000, 1 000 000 000

Also, I think there is another error in the translation. I don't know japanese or chinese so all I base this on is my logic:

"third of the size" and "decreased by 3 billion" means that the world population before the war was 4,5 billion. But that number is a bit odd. Sure, the author can make the world as he likes but I think he intended it to be a bit like the real world so since currently there are around 8 billion people on earth, 2045 there probably would be 9 billion.
So if we change the "decreased by 3 billion" to "decreased to 3 billion" it would mean that in the mahouka verse there were 9 billion people on earth in 2045 and after the war there were only 3 billion left; 6 billion died.

All in all I just think it should say "to" instead of "by" :?

The beginning of the partial sentence that your missing on the Chinese translation on page 359 is pretty minor. 沈鬱な表情で、or basically "With a depressed look on his face," which precedes "Chou replied back in a voice filled with heartfelt concern" line.

The other missing line on page 346 is a bit confusing, i think there was a mix-up in the order of the lines.

Current Order:
"Of course I believe you...... But also, please don't tell anyone that I can use "Dokigiri"."

After receiving Tatsuya's confirmation even though he didn't ask for a reason, Mari still continued on for some reason.

"Ah, of course."

"Thanks for your help. In reality, I didn't actually formally receive training in this technique.....

Actual order:
"Of course I believe you...... But also, please don't tell anyone that I can use "Dokigiri"."

(missing line) 噂話に興じる趣味を達也は持ち合せていない。だから黙っていて欲しいと頼まれれば.
(note: my Japanese as gone to shit since i haven't used it in years, but its something like "Tatsuya doesn't have the hobby of enjoying gossip. therefore she hopped that he would not talk about it" (that sounds horribly awkward and too literal haha)

"Ah, of course."

After receiving Tatsuya's confirmation even though he didn't ask for a reason, Mari still continued on for some reason.

"Thanks for your help. In reality, I didn't actually formally receive training in this technique......

Drey noted that there was a missing line before the "thanks for your help" line, but its actually 2 lines before that, and there's some order swapping as well.

In volume 5 chapter 2 the sentence "There was a 3 cm difference height wise between Tatsuya and Azusa." that looks like it should probably be "30 cm" instead. Otherwise Azusa is pretty damn tall.

Hey guys, gonna need a quick TLC here. This passage appears on p. 32 of vol. 7, ch. 8:
And that was to "never ask of her background or goals".
Not asking her background appeared to be an odd request for Fujibayashi Kyouko.
She was the daughter of the famous Fujibayashi Family who were renowned for Ancient Magic and the granddaughter of Kudou Retsu, one of the elders from the Ten Master Clans, which was something he knew in the beginning.
On top of this, she added a condition to "never ask for her background", which blatantly implied that she was more than meets the eye.
The passage seems to be repeating itself as in "She asked for X, and also X", when it should be "She asked for X, and also Y". I don't know which order though, can someone check? =S

Fujibayashi Kyouko made only one request. and that is - like it says - "to not ask her about her background". i guess the word "still" is missing in the last sentence.
On top of this, she "still" added a condition to "never ask for her background", which blatantly implied that she was more than meets the eye.

Volume 5 Presidential elections and the queen

Current: An overly bright smile floating across his face, Tatsuya’s eyes bore into Azusa’s eyes and wouldn’t let them escape.
Original (the (?) is there intentionally): 顔には爽やかな(?)笑みを浮かべているが、達也の目は、あずさの瞳を射すくめて逃がさなかった。
Although the first part (before the comma) is a bit weird, the rest are quite good, especially the excellent choice of word "bore into" is very close in meaning to 瞳を射すくめて.

Current: There was a 30 cm difference height wise between Tatsuya and Azusa.
Original: 達也とあずさの身長差は三十センチ弱。
I confirm that it is 30cm. However, there seems to be some minor meaning loss in translation. I am not sure, but it is probably "a little less than 30cm difference in height".

Hello everyone this is my first post i found some weird terms and some words are missing in volume 7 chapter 10 that i found while reading. I'm not sure if its a typo or anything just wanted to ask for clarification.

"There is only one hostile vessel invading the harbor. Currently, no other enemy vessels have been discovered in Tokyo Bay. Although the enemy numbers on land have yet to be identified, the enemy has a stranglehold on the entire shoreline. Land-based communications are practically completely disabled, another thing we have to thank the mobile forces for."

the word stranglehold is it correct or a mistype from the word stronghold?

As if waiting for this cue — although he really wanted believe she had better character than that — a woman entered the waiting room.

Stronghold does not make sense in that context.

Here is a definition of stranglehold:

A stranglehold is a grappling hold that strangles the opponent.

Basically, the phrase you are concerned with means "the invaders have complete control of the shoreline."
