Nareru SE (teaser included)

Spoiler! :
Title: You can be one! Systems Engineer
Subtitle: In Two Weeks, Understood? SE Introduction

Living an ordinary life is hard.

Sakurazaka Kouhei was told that from the day he was born, to where he hated hearing it.

He understood. He really did.

Even if you aren’t aiming to be a rock star, nor a formula one racer, nor to push on down the road to be a top athlete.

Ordinary life is very painful, even torture.

High school entrance exams were a nightmare.

College entrance exams were hell.

In the complicated world of human relations in school, even to maintain one’s position required great effort. You had to be stronger even than iron.

It was the same even after he luckily succeeded in getting into his first choice of college. Starting to live alone in Tokyo, the stormy seas of society unforgivingly advanced on him.

Knowing the heaviness of money from a part-time job at a convenience store, catching a glimpse of the layers of society in the club’s pecking order, and being taught lessons about the greatness of his mother by his failures in the kitchen. Rent, energy, water, anything and everything about living cost, and it was worrisome.

Living an ordinary life is hard---

Kouhei understood that reality in his bones.

And yet.

And yet however.

Finding, ordinary, employment, though, he never thought it would be so hard.

February of his third college year, when he had been rejected by his first employment interview, Kouhei thought “That wasn’t too different from my interview for a part-time job”, and shrugged it off casually.

As March rolled around, the number of rejections had passed ten, and for the first time he started thinking that maybe it would be a good idea to come up with a backup plan.

As April came in, and the final stage of getting his first job approached, he began to get scared of being out of cell-phone range. A recruiter might try to call in that moment he was in a place with no signal. Because his phone didn’t connect, he would be removed from a list of people to be interviewed. ---So he thought, and he couldn’t feel safe without checking his cell-phone every few minutes.

May.

The time for completion of the first phase of obtaining employment with major companies.

Kouhei’s count of tentative offers, of course, was still zero.

The recession, cutbacks in hiring, adjustments of employment. Well, even if his own college said he’d done fairly well attending there, in the end, he said “I’ll manage somehow or other” negligently, in conceit. Whether because of club activities or something else, he was a little delayed in starting his job hunt, compared to the rest.

There were probably several reasons. Perhaps if organized himself, he might be able to deal with the problems one by one. ---And yet from a faltering start, Kouhei’s heart became impatient, and gradually he strayed from his hunt for a job.

Not having much practical knowledge of the business world, he depended on urban legends about sure-fire ways to win in interviews, and in clumsiest ways tried to discover what it was the interviewers wanted to hear.

But, bluffing that way could not be expected to turn out well, and when June arrived, Kouhei’s count of tentative job offers was still zero.

Being unable to become a salaryman, feeling this desperate, was unexpected. He felt as if his entire humanity was being negated, his so-called existence entirely rejected.

One step ahead of him, possessing job offers, his fellow college students were enjoying what time in school remained to them. Kouhei lost his cool, and could not understand what in the world was different between himself and them. Still not understanding, like a zombie almost, he kept waiting for his cell-phone to ring.

July---

The rainy season starting, the time of summer heat slowly came in.

Calling from home, his parents got ahold of him.

Since job hunting didn’t look good--- if there weren’t any job openings in Tokyo, then come back home, they said.

There was just room in Kouhei’s home, a well established small business, for him to work. Watched over by his strict father, working steadily, the son would probably not be allowed to do such things as repeat a year’s studies.

Either find a job, or return home to take over the family business.

Being pushed to where he had to make a choice, he trusted in his last resort. He accessed the fall employment section of a job search site.

And then, the day came when July, too, was running out.

He found a job offer.

Suruga Systems Corporation.

He’d never heard of the place. It was in the system development business, data processing. With about thirty employees, it was a small company established some years ago.

When he was just starting to look for a job, it seems he had took no notice of such job offers. Apart from e-mail, the internet, and using the word processor for his graduation thesis, PCs were not something Kouhei used. The sight of himself as an engineer was something he could not even imagine. And, more importantly, rumor had it amongst the students that System Engineers were worked hard. Maybe for a big company, but small to medium sized data processing companies were not to be considered.

Nevertheless, beneath the main job listing information was written something that caught Kouhei’s eye.

‘You seek possibilities you can’t see yet---’

Your own… possibilities---

Kouhei having lost his self-confidence through frequent rejection, those words echoed heavily. If there were inside himself possibilities being called for, he wanted to try and find them. He wanted to be found by people who could make use of him. Such feverish feelings came boiling up in Kouhei’s heart.

Suruga Systems’ help wanted advertisement was unique.

Hardly an explanation of a career path or an advertisement seeking men of talent, somebody had simply written down a request for ordinary engineers, even green ones.

Somebody from the liberal arts program, a novice in computers would be fine.

Unused to the business world, he didn’t even have the basic knowledge required. Nevertheless, as a Suruga Systems engineer, you would be expected to work alone in front of customers.

Failures and recoveries, challenges and setbacks.

Thinking over and over again, “I cannot do it anymore”, being encouraged by senior employees to get up again. And then at last finishing a big project, earning a word of thanks for the customer.

‘Thank you Y-san, thanks to you, we have safely cutover to the company’s new system.’

---

Having suddenly finished reading it, it drew a tear from even Kouhei’s eyes.

He saw an image of himself, superimposed with that of Y-san, plunging onwards toward his goal, fighting against a headwind.

So it was, however painful, however hard. If you don’t give up you can make it somehow, and the way opens.

---

If only he’d noticed if Suruga Systems was taking applications.

The answer came to him at once.

The candidate information session day and place, the acceptance process briefly explained. Kouhei cancelled everything on his schedule and made reservations for the information session.

What followed seemed too good to be true.

To the information session, his papers, then a written exam. To the human resources interview, then an executive interview.

There weren’t even any safeguards in the interviews.

Thinking he only wanted to be like Y-san, the words that came out of him differed from the manual. The interviewer talking enthusiastically to Kouhei vigorously nodded to him.

‘Sakurazaka-san, you really are one of the better ones, aren’t you?’

The person in charge of human resources smiled while saying that.

‘Apart from our company, there aren’t any others left for which you are in final selection?’

Absolutely not! Kouhei shook his head.

I think of your company as my #1 choice. I wasn’t planning on applying at another company.

‘I see.’

The employment manager nodded, a serious look on his face. While he nodded, he leaned forward earnestly.

--- That being the case, then we would certainly like you to sign this letter of acceptance of a job offer. To tell you the truth, though there are other tentative job offer letters out there, the paperwork and formalities involved are getting delayed, and may fall outside the time limits we have.
No, this is why we are talking with you, Sakurazaka-san.

Kouhei, as an immediate reply nodded and signed the letter of acceptance.

In this way --- Kouhei’s search for a job too quickly came to a close.

He called home to let them know that he had decided what he was going to do after graduation.

Both his parents tilted their heads in puzzlement, not recognizing the name of the company, and abandoned hope of his returning home.

Even his acquaintances from clubs and seminars heard about his job offer and congratulated him.

Something taken for granted --- everybody sends greetings to he who regains a normal life.

Not long afterwards, he saw a special report on commercial fraud on the television.

‘The defrauding company’s trick was well done, wasn’t it?’

The so-called consumer complaint specialist guy spoke with a carefree tone of voice.

‘First of all, he tells you about how things have worked for him. “When I bought this charm, my business improved, or I passed my exam.”, that sort of thing. He gives you examples. Next, he gets you worried. If you don’t buy now, there won’t be any left. He tells you it’s your last chance.’

‘I see’, the host idol agreed exaggeratedly.

The man nodded while continuing to speak.

‘He’ll also tell you that you are special. I’m telling you this because you are a special person, he’ll say. Well, if you think about it, it just plain suspicious. But if they sell their goods well, going around persuading, one by one especially, they don’t need (grin) to be particularly efficient.’

‘Ahahaa, for sure.’

‘Well, scammers aim for people who are easy to trick, after all. The faint of heart, people worried about things, and finally people who find themselves backed into a corner. In short, people whose judgement has been clouded.’

I’m not normally the calmest of people, so I may have been tricked once or twice. At the idol’s airy comment, the meeting room suddenly livened up.

Fresh out the bath, wetting his whistle with a cola, Kouko suddenly tilted his head to one side.

Hmm… these past days somehow resembled the conversation he was hearing, but why?
Feel free to correct any misinterpretation there may be here.

This is jumping the gun just a little. There are another four pages to the introduction, and I haven't gotten around to translating them yet. I have, however, transcribed them into TXT format, plus the first four pages of chapter one, if anybody else cares to translate it.

No stress - the idea was just to get your little teaser separated from its origin thread, where it could be easily overlooked, but I didn't want it start is as a future projekt suggestion or even as a wiki teaser, since I haven't enough information about this series and since you already said that you probably wouldn't have the time or leisure to continue, since you have already your other project.

What genre is this story? I mean, from the teaser, it has the same aura as Welcome to the NHK...

Nice question. The author was a tech-person himself, or so I've been told. So am I (hence the curiosity on my part). From the artwork, though, there seems to be a strong lolicon aspect . . . a reason on my part to be hesitant about translating it, all apart from the fact that I have a full project I am already working on: Golden Time.

Please check out the Baka-Tsuki Blog entry from several months ago for more details.

I've also written a few lines about it here.

The lolicon aspect isn't really bothering or a prominent element to the story IMO. Besides, a slightly yandere-ish heroine is making an appearance starting at volume 2, plus a few other ladies and gentlemen (usually clients or co-workers). The story is more about Kohei switching into his bad-ass IT mode and solving a vast variety of IT-related problems he's confronted with, from installing wireless LAN to project management.

Then it appears we can safely call this story 'seinen'.

The light novel, perhaps. The manga appears to be a ecchi comedy.

Having scanned through (but not scanlated) the manga tankobon, translated most of the prologue of the first book, and heard what others around here have been saying, I can only guess that the writer started the story focusing on Kouhei, but the audience responded to Rikka, so they shifted the focus of the series. There is no question that the light novel focuses on Kouhei (he's the point of view character, at least in the prologue of volume 1), but who knows what they will do with the manga and potential anime?

Of course, we don't have to look too far . . . compare Toradora. That story is almost 100% written from the point of view of Ryuuji, which rare glimpses into the thoughts Taiga and Minori, but who gets the attention in the anime? I'm not complaining, only observing for comparison.

For that matter, Golden Time. The point of view character is Banri (or his ghost), but the focus of virtually all the illustrations is the female characters, particularly Kouko.

OK, I finished the prologue. See the first posting in this topic.

In addition, I have the first four pages of the first chapter transcribed, though not translated.

UPDATE: And a minimal teaser page has been created.
