Updated MTL policy and new WN policy

Post by Cthaeh »

After much discussion, Baka Tsuki administrators have updated the policy for machine translations (MTL) and implemented new policy on Web Novels (WN).

Important points for MTL
  • New MTL should not be added to the wiki without prior approval
  • The "Preview" tag and template should no longer be used, and should be replaced with the "MTL" tag and template
  • Existing MTL text on the wiki may be removed or grandfathered on a case by case basis, but in either case, it should be tagged "MTL" (not Preview) and include the template MTL-old (not Preview)
  • In special cases where machine translation has been thoroughly checked and revised by someone with a solid understanding of source language, it may be granted approval by administration to be added to the wiki
  • External links to MTL will likely be removed.
For MTL, it has always been a debate between being open to all contributions and honestly and accurately representing the original work. And in this case the majority of BT administration of contributors have voted to favor the later. Many aspects of this policy were largely already introduced over a year ago, however it will be enforced more strictly with this update to the policy.

Important points for WNs
  • WN projects will be moved to a separate category.
  • In cases there is a published light novel adaptation, the WN project will be clearly marked to distinguish it from the published light novel. In cases where translations exist for both, they should have separate project pages.
  • New WNs should not be added to the wiki without prior approval, and only new projects from translators wishing to post text will be accepted (no new externally linked)
  • Existing WN projects will be allowed to remain for the most part as long as they do not violate any other BT policies, but may be removed on a case by case basis in the future.
For WNs, it was a difficult decision, but the administration decided that WNs have more in common with Original Light Novels (OLNs) as they are both unpublished works. Therefore, we have decided to model our WN policy after the current OLN policy in requiring approval. We will still allow most Web Novel projects that translators would like to host on BT, however we would like our focused to be on published light novels, and will therefore not act as a hub for WN external links.

Note that the exact wording and final details of these policies may be revised. The full implementation of these policies will also take time, so some changes will not occur immediately.
