I suggest making a set place for them that is "safe." Not putting them on them floor, dropping them, and the like will take you a long way.

I've tried and tried, but the last thing I want to do after running is put my headphones into/onto a table or something. I've just gotten to the point of putting my stereo headphones on my desk instead of throwing them onto the floor. (I'm rough with things.)
